Irritating map typo on p 45: in place of the map of the Vermont/Massachusetts border, they have the map of the Massachusetts/Conneticut border, the very same map that is reprinted again in its proper place on p. 127. Other than that, a useful comprehensive guide to these sections of the A.T.

This is not his next book, this is a preview for a book that is coming out next year, but this is only mentioned inside the actual book.

So this is a small version of his yet not published book, the price is right for a small book, but the marketing is misleading and this should be addressed ASAP

Yet ANOTHER repetition of Wilber's work

As anticipated, much of this piece is a re-statement of Wilber's previously published material (the majority several times over) and offers little by way of new insight. It is astonishing to see how one author can apparently gain so much mleage from repeating the same material to such a high degree.

Evolution, transcending and including spiritual stuckness

This is a book with a far-reaching vision, in a way a visionary book. It's central thesis is that the core ideas of the Great Spiritual and Religious Traditions are urgently needing re-interpretation and being included in a more inclusive context. These core ideas can literally and seriously be retained, when applying an `Integral Framework'. The core doctrines need to include the many new discoveries about spiritual experience, spiritual intelligence, and spiritual development, and in science and the humanities; discoveries that have been made during the last thousand years. The fundamental dogma's and dharmas and gospels were originally created at least a thousand years ago and there have been hardly any `updates'. Wilber suggests a spiritual framework that `transcends and includes' the central teachings of the Traditions, including the old but also adding a significant amount of new material that is fully compatible with the old, but that, in essence, brings it up to date in the modern and postmodern world.
Buddhism, while needing updates has, unlike virtually every other Great Tradition, always been open to the continuing unfolding and expansion of its own teachings, as already evidenced in its own notion of the `Three Turnings of the Wheel of Dharma (Truth),' that refer to earlier updatings. While not everybody from the main Buddhist schools in East and West will agree with all these `updatings,' yet Wilber makes out a strong case.
The groundwork for Integral may already have been presented before, in earlier books (stages, states, shadows etc); however, what touches me here is the refinement, the elaborations, specific applications, and real-life examples, that make the book so lively and urgent.
States of consciousness and structure stages of development get ample attention. Buddhism has been very generous in offering clear state-paths. Regarding structure stages: so many conventional religions are `stuck at Mythic'-traditional development and haven't evolved into higher stages with new, time-appropriate meanings and approaches. Buddhism, according to Wilber, from the beginning has been in the Rational sphere, inviting: look for yourself, don't just go on the name or position of the teacher. In the West, Buddhism is mostly manifesting in Pluralistic-postmodern (sensitive, `green', anti-hierarchy) expressions - this is some of the jargon the reader will get familiar with. The fact that hidden shadows of developmental arrests cannot be seen by introspecting, when not taking into account a structural developmental view, can be elaborated both for personal development and for an evolving society or worldview. It would be very sad if Buddhism wouldn't transcend into the structure leap into a more inclusive integral position, including transcending the position that believes its truths and values are the only real truths and values in existence. Our present world is in great need for this transcending into truly holistic and inclusive views. Some Buddhist teachers clearly are on this path.
Something that touches me: the elaborations on the logos of evolution, the elaboration of creativity in the Kosmos (122). It is about all that `came from interior thoughts as utterly real objects or ontologically real phenomena - stored in their primary forms somewhere in the real Kosmos', that are reaching down and having an absolutely real causal impact on the daily life world. All that which is manifesting in matter, forms, views and concepts: `creating our world', the world we can perceive. And that which `came from interior thoughts,' this transcendence, this - right now - is something `we' are part of, it is something `we are'. We are this evolution!
Some side-remarks. As is mentioned in the first line in the book: this is a very short, very introductory version of a larger and more detailed `regular' book, hard-cover, to be released next year. The layout I find rudimentary and not comfortable: there are very large chunks of text, for tens of pages without subheadings. There is a very brief Contents overview. For me, more subsections would have been helpful, with including the titles in the Contents overview.
For all those interested in spirituality, religion, philosophy, psychology, contemplative practices, questions of meaning, interested not only in `theories of everything' but really in everything that matters, felt-sense, and our common future: a book that deserves a large audience and deep and wide immersion, discussion and dialogue. Es importante como padre el fomentar la palabra de Dios a nuestros hijos y este libro es una gran herramienta. Un excelente libro de historias de la biblia. Preciosa herencia espiritual

Este libro es muy lindo, pero sobre todo la enseñanza en la fe que se le puede dar a los hijos, tiene un lenguaje muy facil para ellos, y aun para los que no pueden leer si alguien mas se los lee ellos se pueden inmaginas junto con las hermosas imagenes a todo color que el libro presenta.

About the Author

SUNIL CHOPRA

Sunil Chopra is the IBM Distinguished Professor of Operations Management and Information Systems at the Kellogg School of Management. He has served as the interim dean and senior associate dean for curriculum and teaching, and the codirector of the MMM program, a joint dual-degree program between the Kellogg School of Management and the McCormick School of Engineering at Northwestern University. He has a PhD in operations research from SUNY at Stony Brook. Prior to joining Kellogg, he taught at New York University and spent a year at IBM Research.

 

Professor Chopra’s research and teaching interests are in supply chain and logistics management, operations management, and the design of telecommunication networks. He has won several teaching awards at the MBA and Executive programs of Kellogg. He has authored more than 40 papers and two books.

 

He has been a department editor for Management Science and an associate editor for Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, Operations Research, and Decision Sciences Journal. His recent research has focused on understanding supply chain risk and devising effective risk mitigation strategies. He has also consulted for several firms in the area of supply chain and operations management.

 

PETER MEINDL

Peter Meindl is a portfolio manager with Kepos Capital in New York. Previously, he was a research officer with Barclays Global Investors, a consultant with the Boston Consulting Group and Mercer Management Consulting, and the director of strategy with i2 Technologies. He holds PhD, MS, BS, and BA degrees from Stanford, and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern.

 

The first edition of this book won the prestigious Book of the Year award in 2002 from the Institute of Industrial Engineers.

Fantastic with clear, real examples.

This is a very well written textbook that focuses predominantly on the business side than the engineering side of supply chain management. It does go into some mathematical details in the development of various models and equations and does a fantastic job of explaining how to solve problems with them AND how to use Excel.

However, what it really does well is emphasize to the manager who may or may not be strong in math or even care for it what the equations and models MEAN and WHY are they set up the way they are. The book assumes a great deal that those people who need to actually solve the problems, typically industrial engineers and operations researchers, will pick up the techniques and more realistic problems elsewhere. This is more for the manager to be able to understand whatever an engineer might be talking about.

Off the mathematical side, the book is heavy with real-world examples which it gives in exhaustive detail, and it takes great care in comparing and contrasting examples when trying to illustrate a point or go further into detail with some concept. You'll revisit the same examples over and over again but with new clarity as the text dives deeper and deeper into the successes and failures and practices of businesses as it needs to clarify something new when a new topic is introduced. In fact, you may read through an example and think to yourself, "Yeah, but why doesn't affect it?" only to find out, yes, it does, but the textbook moved it to a more appropriate section where that "something else" had more to do with the new topic. As such, this book keeps a very tight grip on any point it tries to make, and I've not read ONE instance of it breaking off into an unnecessary tangent or becoming convoluted with unnecessary details. It is to the point.

Finally, it is analytical in nature. When a topic is discussed, there is no silly "in an ideal world, the manager should do this and that" since it rightly understands we don't live in an ideal world. It simply looks at what other businesses have done and focuses on what made them work or didn't work.

However, it gets 4 stars for one reason: its organization of tables and charts is a mess. You may look at a table that gives percentages and wonder why it's organized the way it is; it is neither decreasing or increasing in percentages, nor is it alphabetized, nor is it in an order that makes sense based on a preceding paragraph's discussion. For example, if you're trying to find the largest impact on making your business global instead of local, you'll see about 20 different reasons, but you'll need to parse through them to find that biggest one. And, like most things, it is typically more than one answer, and they'll be everywhere. Charts are not as bad but can still be a bit irritating; axes may not be properly defined, and you may see some instances where the X and Y axes are switched (this happens sometimes when visualization is key, such as in seeing how the temperature changes according to altitude, and we immediately recognize altitude as an up-and-down thing even though it "technically" should be on the horizontal axis as an independent variable).

However, as per the parenthetical, there is often an explanation for why such a switch happens. Not so here. It's nothing too major, but it can be a bit jarring at first glance, giving the need for a double-take.

Still, in trying to focus on the theoretical foundations for why a supply chain works and why it wouldn't work, this book's graceful interlacing of SOLID examples and staying away from "too abstract, too ideal" scenarios is amazing, and it deserves a spot on any bookshelf.

Understandable but complex - for a complex subject

I used this book for an undergrad Architecture course. I had a great teacher, and we only looked at certain sections in the book. There is an awful lot to cover in a single semester.

The book is written for students with very little formal electronics knowledge, but you do need to know some basic logic and hardware concepts. It is based on the i86 architecture, making generalizations where possible. If you have a strong background, or want to learn very detailed concepts - then there are better choices. Sometimes this book over-simplifies concepts to reach its intended audience.

I later found the book useful as a reference tool in a graduate architecture class. Especially the sections on memory - cache, virutal, pagefiles, etc.. Even though my grad class was on the MiPS architecture, the concepts are the same.

Overall, this was a decent text for an undergraduate course.

As other reviewers, (good and bad) have noted - when you are learning, you should always use additional references. Don't depend on this book alone to teach you.

Part of what makes this text so difficult to understand is the author's inability to use consistent terms while trying to explain material. In the first chapter, a simple And gate is referred to as 'AND', 'x^y', 'x.y', 'xy', '()()', and 'and'. All true, but used interchangeably while trying to explain makes the concepts incredibly difficult to decipher, particularly when variations for representing other boolean concepts are added to the fray.
The best part of the book, as far as I can tell, is that the key terms are in bold so I know what to plug into Google to try and figure out what it is.

A failure for purely academic reasons

The first chapter is the most important in the book. And yet it is riddled with poor grammar, truth table errors, no answers to questions in the back of book etc. I don't understand how someone who understands the subject can convey so little meaningful information. Actually I do understand, and this book's academic blasphemy should be burnt black as ruined toast. Money down the drain, as Ricky Ricardo "splained" things to Lucy at a much higher level. This book leaves me bitter if you hadn't noticed.
