I'll still say Chase was a great writer and a master of great plots

Although I found too many coincidences in the story, for instance how the characters in a far-away city just keep running into each other, end up in the same hospital, meet tragedy on the same street at the same time, mysteriously end up in the same locations at the same time, in three situations meet coincidentally in the same hotel over and over again, I'll still say Chase was a great writer and a master of great plots.

a rewarding classic

A towering book of scholarship from the mind of a Japanese Zen master with an almost mystical mastery of English prose. One needn't be a student of Buddhism or particularly interested in the history of Zen and its historical impact to benefit mightily from this book. It's beautiful literature! The passages (in two generous chapters) on Zen and Swordsmanship stand with the best in English literature. Suzuki's perspective is broad and inclusive, if entirely his own, and includes the historic relationship of Zen to nature, art, haiku, and more narrowly the Japanese Tea Ceremony. It's a rewarding book that only deeps with each reading. Unconditional recommendation.

Publius Aelius Aristides Theodorus was among the most celebrated authors of the Second Sophistic and an important figure in the transmission of Hellenism. Born to wealthy landowners in Mysia in 117, he studied in Athens and Pergamum before he fell chronically ill in the early 140s and retreated to Pergamum’s healing shrine of Asclepius. By 147 Aristides was able to resume his public activities and pursue a successful oratorical career. Based at his family estate in Smyrna, he traveled between bouts of illness and produced speeches and lectures, declamations on historical themes, polemical works, prose hymns, and various essays, all of it displaying deep and creative familiarity with the classical literary heritage. He died between 180 and 185.

This edition of Aristides, new to the Loeb Classical Library, offers fresh translations and texts based on the critical editions of Lenz-Behr (Orations 1–16) and Keil (Orations 17–53). Volume I contains the Panathenaic Oration, a historical appreciation of classical Athens and Aristides’ most influential work, and A Reply to Plato, the first of three essays taking issue with the attack on orators and oratory delivered in Plato’s Gorgias.

The Danish architect and industrial designer Poul Kjærholm has always been quietly revered in modernist design circles, but in recent years his work has attained cult status among a younger generation of designers and connoisseurs. This exquisite monograph presents a comprehensive retrospective view of Kjærholm's work, and also shows the history out of which his aesthetic grew. It features seven shorter essays by the American architect and Kjærholm expert Michael Sheridan, along with several hundred photographs and descriptive copy. It is the deepest and widest-ranging study of Kjærholm's work to date.
Poul Kjærholm was born in 1929 in Denmark. He became head of Denmark's prestigious Institute for Design in 1973, and served there until his death in 1980. Over the years he designed dozens of chairs, recliners and tables that became landmarks of Danish furniture design, including the famous PK 24 reclining chair. His works are in the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and many other international design museums. Kjærholm was the recipient of many important awards in industrial and graphic design, including two Grand Prix at the Milan Trienale (1957 and 1960), the ID Award and the Lunning Award.

This is an Awesome Book about Echo and Alexa.

I truly admire this book and Steve Wright, the author, by providing this wonderful awesome and helpful book about Echo.

This book is very helpful. Everything you need to know about Echo is already included here.
The book is divided with different sections. The first section includes the basics about Echo, how to set it up, how to talk to your echo the first time, and many more commands.. (oopss, you will also meet 'Alexa', you virtual assistant with Echo.)
Another section is about SmartHome with Echo. This section basically details about how to use Echo with the devices at your home, example for lighting and fans, switches and outlets, doors, thermostats, locks, car control, etc.
There is also a section about Echo while you're at Work.. which for me, is very essential to be more efffective and efficient at work.
Another sections are for StayFit with Echo, which talks about your health and fitness, and many apps are also included here; StreamMusic on Your Echo, which details about many 'how-to-do's' and many applications about Music on Echo; Safety on Echo; and some Easter Eggs and Tips.

Overall, there are so much to know about from this book. Lots of helpful apps, guides, and instructions are included in this fine book about Echo.

I highly recommend this book to everyone who are using Echo, or those who want to learn more about Echo and what are the benefits of this to your life.

Clever Straightforward Guide

What a wonderful gadget Echo is. This piece of technology can do everything and really enrich you daily life. However like a lot of smart technology it is not the easiest to work out how to use or how to get the most out of it. That's where this book comes in, it is really good at giving you a detailed, easy to follow, step by step guide to Echo. The author very plainly explains what Echo is, what it can do for you and then proceeds to describe how to go about using it. The book is simple and easy to follow without blinding you with science.

I have recently purchased Amazon Echo and have read this book to learn how to configure it and how to get maximum benefit out of it. I especially liked the section about how to program Echo to control Thermostat, Lights and door locks. The book is well written and all tips were clearly explained.

This book describes in detail the matrix methods of structural analysis used for the analysis of skeletal or framed structures. The book provides comprehensive coverage of the subject, starting with the basics. It is organised in four parts. Part 1 contains the basic knowledge required to understand the subject: matrix operations, methods for solving equations, and concepts of flexibility matrix and stiffness matrix methods. Part 2 deals with the applications of stiffness and flexibility matrix methods using a system approach. By using simple examples, the steps involved in both the methods are discussed' this section concludes with discussion of why the stiffness matrix method is more suitable for analysis of skeletal structures. Part 3 covers the stiffness matrix (displacement) method with member approach (direct stiffness method) which is extensively used in the analysis of framed structures. It provides the details of the method, the steps involved in the method, and its application to plane truss, space truss, beams, plane and space frames, and grids. Part 4 includes a unified computer programme written in FORTRAN/C for the analysis of a framed structure. The development of computer programme, explanation of various subroutines, and input output formats with examples are also provided. An accompanying CD contains source code, explanation of INPUT/OUTPUT and test examples. The primary objective of the book is to present the subject matter in a simple manner so that it can serve as a basic learning tool for undergraduate and postgraduate students of civil engineering.

About the Author
P.N. Godbole obtained Bachelors (Honours) degree in Civil Engineering from IIT Bombay, Masters (Structures) from the erstwhile University of Roorkee, India (Now IIT Roorkee) and Doctorate from University of Wales, Swansea, UK. He worked in various capacities at Civil Engineering Department of University of Roorkee from 1963 onwards, where he had a long and distinguished career in teaching, research and consultancy. After retirement, he joined VNIT, Nagpur, where he utilized award of AICTE and UGC Emeritus Fellowship and later on continued as Professor Emeritus. At present he is Professor Emeritus at RCOEM Nagpur, India. He has published more than 140 research papers in national and international journals/conferences and has supervised 25 doctoral candidates. He has also authored books on Cable Suspended Roofs and Finite Element Method.His main areas of interest are finite element method, computer aided design, wind effects on structure and steel structures. R.S. Sonparote , PhD, is Associate Professor, Department of Applied Mechanics, Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur, India. With 20 years of experience in teaching, research and consultancy, Dr. Sonparote has published/presented several papers in national and international journals/conferences.His main areas of interest are computer aided analysis and design, structural dynamics and soil structure interaction. S.U. Dhote is Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Yeshwantrao Chavan College of Engineering (YCCE), Nagpur, India. His areas of interest are wind effects, matrix analysis, steel structures, earthquake resistance designs and finite element method. He has published/presented several research papers in national/international journals.

The rise of China is concomitant with the emergence of many giant Chinese corporations. Those corporations are dominating rankings of largest companies worldwide. To reinforce their economic position, Chinese companies aspire to build their own global brands, but few have been successful so far. This research paper seeks to provide an in-depth analysis of Huawei's current brand positioning in Western Europe. To what extent has Huawei been able to create a popular brand? How are Huawei's smartphones perceived in comparison to other global smartphone brands? How effective is Huawei's branding strategy? Is the Huawei brand as a Chinese brand encumbered with country-of-origin effects? To answer these questions, the author applied a mixed methods approach comprising of an online questionnaire and interviews, which have been conducted from June to July 2014. The objective of the questionnaire is to depict the big picture of the Huawei brand among Western European consumers, while the interviews aim to explore relevant issues mentioned in the questionnaire. The main findings show that Huawei's brand is not an established brand at the present moment, but rather is in a transitional stage. Huawei is perceived to have smartphones with an appealing design and sophisticated technological components, but overall lacks strong and succinct associations in comparison to other smartphone brand leaders. In addition, the COO impact and isolated branding approaches result in an ineffective brand strategy, which highlights Huawei's need for a precise and consistent brand management.

How to pack a city into a book - Lesson 1

This is a dense manifesto of ideas. It might be termed a printed hypertext, with a continuous glossary of terms being defined by Koolhaas this could serve as an alternative dictionary. The book is too broad for simply architecture, urban planning theory &c. which it professes to having as its infrastructure. It deals with all design issues, from the content of OMAs projects, to the beautifully printed and assembled object that is the book itself. Attempt to read as a linear narrative at your own risk.

S, M, L, XL, love it or hate it, is seminal; Rem Koolhaas is one of the most important cultural figures on the planet at this time. S, M, L, XL serves as memoir, manifesto, documentation, diagnosis, prognosis, prophecy, plan, agenda, & propoganda -- local and/or global historicocriticophilosophical montage, collage, and barrage. The book is beautiful. Bruce Mau has indeed "given form" to the silver juggernaut. The cover, the illustrations, typographies, photos, and text come together in the manner of a Tristam Shandy or Finnegan's Wake. S, M, L, XL as literature is a commentary on the condition we call "modernity". Koolhaas seeks an understanding of both his profession and the chaotic dynamics of the world his profession leaves structures in. Koolhaas is at home in the chaos, and like Pynchon in fiction, or Antonioni in film, is remarkably detached and involved in the process at the same time(maybe this is false, but Koolhaas as a writer and architect is an auteur possessed by genius, and S, M, L, XL is both comforting and uncanny at the same time). S,M,L,XL is proof that Koolhaas is aware of the increasingly global nature of the architect's profession. I am fascinated by the concept and practice of traveling, and activity Koolhaas knows all too well as a traveler in the discourse and practice of "modernity". Essays within S,M,L,XL such as "Islam After Einstein" and "Singapore Songlines:Thirty Years of Tabula Rasa" show his knowledge of the increasingly important relation between the East and West, and the implications involved. Perhaps the most brilliant essay/manifesto in the book is one of the most recently written, "The Generic City" which questions notions of progress in history and the archeology(ies) of modernism. One photo in the back of S,M,L, XL is particularly haunting in its image and message. It shows a larger-than-life and late Deng Xiaoping in the foreground of a painting of a coastal city, rais! ing his right hand gently to his people looking at the mural. The insert reads, "Two billion people won't be wrong." We'll find out. This is where much of Koolhaas' importance lies, his insight into what the great comparative historian and Sinophile Joseph Needham called the "Grand Titration". S,M,L, XL must endure, though it will not be read by the masses. It transcends (a dangerous word to use) architectural writing. Anyone concerned about the future of both the arts and sciences and those who wish to gain a greater understanding of our relation to our environment(s) must read this book.

There's a terrific line in Breakfast at Tiffany's. George Peppard proudly hands neighbor Audrey Hepburn a copy of his just-published book. She has no idea what to do with it, so she puts it on a shelf next to a vase, backs away and says "Doesn't that look nice?"
This book is a lot like that. A self-conciously designed object for the homes of style consumers who already have the right clothes and the B&B Italia furniture. A prop for the still-life they want to inhabit. If they ever got around to "reading" it, they'd discover to their great relief... it's NOT a book to be read in any strict classical sense.

It also reminds me of a New Yorker cartoon where one associate asks another, "Read the first few pages of any good books lately?" The age of the short attention span is not going away any time soon. This hefty grey slab is easily recast as the shiny new headstone for verbalized intelligence.

As Kracauer holds it, there's nothing wrong with framing a culture via fragments, but I have plenty of qualms about advancing one's own ideas that way. And I'm suspect of ideas that trowel on style in the abundance seen here. If I could believe Bruce Mau's intentions were more than just trying to look new, (This 'look' now permeates architecture publications) I'd have more respect for this, but it was obviously calculated as a totem of style and style-suffusion.

For better or for worse, the book got noticed, the industry was distracted by the pretty surfaces and the ascent of Koolhaas is a done deal.

The fourth edition of Foundations of Legal Research and Writing gives equal weight to research and writing making it a perfect resource to be used for both legal research and legal writing classes. About the Author
Carol M. Bast is Associate Professor in the Department of Legal Studies at the University of Central Florida. She has won several professional awards, frequently presents at legal and academic conferences, and is an active member of the American Society of Writers on Legal Subjects and the Legal Writing Institute. Her many published works include articles on legal research, legal writing, eavesdropping, and wiretapping, as well as Foundations of Law and Florida Courts, a textbook. Carol Bast earned an M.B.A. from University of Central Florida, a Ph.D. in Spanish from University of Florida, and a J.D. from the New York Law School.

Margie Hawkins is a librarian with national law firm Holland & Knight LLP, and has expertise in computer-assisted legal research and the Internet. A member of the American Association of Law Libraries (A.A.L.L.) and the Orange County Bar Association, she also served on the Advisory Committee for the Valencia Community College Paralegal Studies Program for more than fourteen years. Ms. Hawkins received her Masters of Library and Information Science degree from the University of South Florida, and is a member of Beta Phi Mu, the international library and information science honor society. She holds undergraduate degrees in History and Legal Studies from the University of Central Florida.

Research? Writing?

This book has absolutely terrible examples of REAL legal writing prose. I don't think it is well put together and there's a lot of rubbish between the important lines. This book could easily be 50 pages max. I work in a law office and I didn't see any papers looking like these. There's nothing on the court RULES for writing and how it must be filed. I just didn't like the book. There's better out there.

Easy read, informative.

This textbook was required for a Legal Research class. The chapters were broken down in a very logical order, the information was presented in a manner which made it very easy to understand. A high school (or even Junior High) student could read this text and get the gist of everything in it.
