Van Gogh on Demand: China and the Readymade, by Winnie Wong

In a manufacturing metropolis in south China lies Dafen, an urban village that famously houses thousands of workers who paint van Goghs, Da Vincis, Warhols, and other Western masterpieces for the world market, producing an astonishing five million paintings a year. To write about work and life in Dafen, Winnie Wong infiltrated this world, first investigating the work of conceptual artists who made projects there; then working as a dealer; apprenticing as a painter; surveying wholesalers and retailers in Europe, East Asia and North America; establishing relationships with local leaders; and organizing a conceptual art exhibition for the Shanghai World Expo. The result is Van Gogh on Demand, a fascinating book about a little-known aspect of the global art world—one that sheds surprising light on the workings of art, artists, and individual genius. Confronting big questions about the definition of art, the ownership of an image, and the meaning of originality and imitation, Wong describes an art world in which idealistic migrant workers, lofty propaganda makers, savvy dealers, and international artists make up a global supply chain of art and creativity. She examines how Berlin-based conceptual artist Christian Jankowski, who collaborated with Dafen’s painters to reimagine the Dafen Art Museum, unwittingly appropriated the work of a Hong Kong-based photographer Michael Wolf. She recounts how Liu Ding, a Beijing-based conceptual artist, asked Dafen “assembly-line” painters to perform at the Guangzhou Triennial, neatly styling himself into a Dafen boss. Taking the Shenzhen-based photojournalist Yu Haibo’s award-winning photograph from the Amsterdam's World Press Photo organization, she finds and meets the Dafen painter pictured in it and traces his paintings back to an unlikely place in Amsterdam. Through such cases, Wong shows how Dafen’s painters force us to reexamine our preconceptions about creativity, and the role of Chinese workers in redefining global art. Providing a valuable account of art practices in an ascendant China, Van Gogh on Demand is a rich and detailed look at the implications of a world that can offer countless copies of everything that has ever been called “art.”

Review
“Van Gogh on Demand shines. . . . [A]  fantastically detailed exploration of a topic which touches the heart of many of the issues surrounding China's economic rise.” (South China Morning Post)

"An impressive investigation." (Fine Art Connoiseur)

“One of the most intriguing reads of the year. . . . “[Wong] has done extensive research and taken the conversation beyond the stereotypes being peddled in the media and even in some contemporary art projects.”  (Hyperallergic)

“A penetrating analysis of how the artistic theories of the Duchampian ready-made and their successors in conceptual art practice outside China can be applied to illuminate the history of these Chinese production processes which reciprocally bring the notion of ready-made into focus. . . . An important and valuable book, the first on a long-neglected subject.”
(China Information)

“A fascinating blend of ethnography and art history.”
(Art Practical)

“Based on a thoughtful reading of modern and contemporary art theory, lengthy fieldwork, and practical artistic and curatorial engagement with the world of Dafen artists, Van Gogh on Demand addresses some of the most demanding—and not easily resolved—issues of culture and production. Wong skillfully untangles the complicated skein of interconnections between the realms of traditional practice, contemporary Chinese art, mass-scale production, copying, and art circulation in the global marketplace. Compelling, fluent, and highly quotable, this book is a major contribution to the study of China, modernism, postmodernism, and globalization.” (Geremie Barme, Australian National University)

“Vividly describing a place that is amazing to learn about and fascinating as a story, Van Gogh on Demand is so engagingly written that we are drawn from chapter to chapter in a state of increasing interest that often turns to excitement. Wong tells us much not only about the highly specific kind of artistic production that prevails at Dafen, but also about the international art world and the role of Dafen in the kind of contemporary modernity that China is striving to construct. The convergence of these different worlds is thoroughly and brilliantly shown to throw a fresh light on postmodern appropriation, quotation, and irony. These insights make this book both a persuasive piece of participant observation cultural anthropology and an original instance of contemporary art historical writing.” (Terry Smith, University of Pittsburgh)

Humor, philosophy, anecdotes - and the difficulty of scholarly prose
By Amazon Customer
Background: for last Christmas, I bought my 4-year-old grandson a "hand-painted van Gogh," Harvest at La Crau, with Montmajour in the Background. The original is 72 x 92cm; Ben's copy is 8x10 in. His pre-school teacher had presented several weeks on painting (you have to assume there were no details on a biography unsuited to pre-school), and Ben for whatever reason responded fervently to van Gogh. I wanted him to see the dimension of paint on canvas and I received two gifts from him -- he immediately ran his fingers over the impasto surface, again and again; then he asked that the picture be hung, right then, in his bedroom.

Ben's copy came from China, probably from Dafen Village, which is the setting of Ms. Wong's treatise. That's the setting: the *subject* would have to be summarized as "Challenge everything you ever assumed about art, the artist, creativity, originality, Chinese social structure and politics, and WalMart."

When I ordered the book, five months before it got far enough into production to reach my door, I wanted a popular explication of how (possibly) thousands of painters produce many tens of thousands per year of van Goghs, Utrillos, da Vincis, Bougereaus... well, virtually any famous artist you want to name.

What I got instead is a mix: insightful anecdotes from conversations with painters and bosses; compelling discussions of painting factory methods and organization (many exploitative, some humanistic, avuncular); massive tugs at assumptions around originality; and, frankly, boring excursions into angels-on-the-head-of-a-pin types of things.

Anecdotes? While watching one, er, artist (re-)producing one of van Gogh's sunflower paintings, the artist stood back toward the end, then said, "Time to sign it." Ms. Wong pointed out that van Gogh had not signed the original. The artist: "Oh. You own one?"

Sort-of an anecdote: Ms. Wong quotes from the marketing copy of a van Gogh reproduction sold by Amserdam's van Gogh Museum: "It seemed a dream, but this replica makes it possible: a painting [in reality an inkjet - glicee - print] by Vincent van Gogh on the living room wall, and almost indistinguishable from the real thing... This amazing reproduction is delivered rolled-up, affordable and safe, just as van Gogh sent his own canvases to Paris."

Anecdote: A Dafen van Gogh artist who, chafing under the low wages, exclaimed that he was not making much more than van Gogh did.

Anecdote: Always open about her objective to study Dafen for scholarly purpose, Ms. Wong was interviewing one artist, who pointed out that he was also an "excellent and prolific writer." "...since he had been in Dafen far longer than I, it would be much easier for him to write my dissertation for me.... In the hands of Dafen painters and bosses [and writers], it [ghost-painting, ghost-writing] is a habitual and ubiquitous phenomenon, and recalls a condition in which painting and writing do not constitute any sort of special labor...."

One commentator on the Dafen scene wrote, "I realized that most of Dafen painters remained kind of detached and regarded painting more as a labor job." Of course, for hundreds, maybe even thousands of Europeans artists prior to the Romantic age, painting *was* a "labor job," and not a sort of special labor.

Throughout you'll all sorts of tweaks, all sorts of unanswered and possibly unanswerable questions. For the most part, this book is a sort of high-level page-turner. All this said, however, there are times that I wish a competent copy editor had made some suggestions -- and that Ms. Wong had complied. Take that last sentence in my final anecdote above: could it not be expressed less syllabically: "In the hands of Dafen painters and bosses [and writers], it [ghost-painting, ghost-writing] is ubiquitous. For them, there is no special labor in painting and writing."

Scholarly language aside, what happens when -- the very thing we conceptualize as golden fruit of glorious individual vision -- Art becomes a mass-produced object on an assembly line? Is it automatically schlock?

Ben's little van Gogh is all master strokes done by a master hand with crystal-clear colors. It is, as Ben immediately saw, equally beautiful to both the eye and the hand.

Bloody Stalingrad: The Trilogy (Bloodied Wehrmacht), by Andrew McGregor

November 1942: The Eastern Front

The trilogy of three books set in the final months of the most vicious battle in history.

Leutnant Hausser, a young experienced German infantry officer with the 76th Infantry Division is assigned with a handful of men to the south of Stalingrad. As the fighting heightens in the city, the officer and his men bolster the defences of their allies, the Romanians, on a relatively quiet part of the front.

As the Germans strip their flanks and move units into the city in a desperate attempt to clinch victory, the Russian Red Army prepares a massive offensive designed to trap their enemy in Stalingrad.

As the Russian offensive is launched, smashing through the flanks to the north and south of the freezing city, small units of survivors desperately try and escape the Russian onslaught. Not many will make it.

The battle for the city will continue in the bitterest conditions, the trapped Axis forces struggling against cold, hunger and a vengeful enemy, hell-bent on their destruction.

The German air force, the Luftwaffe, attempt to supply the city from the air. Failing to consider the distance, miserable conditions and roaming Russian fighters and anti-aircraft fire.

Erich Von Manstein, the German Field Marshall is ordered to break through to the frozen city on the banks of the Volga River, the relief effort (Operation Winter Storm) struggling against Russian forces deployed between them and their goal.

Leutnant Hausser and his small squad continue their battle for survival, the rations and ammunition cut, the weather unbearably miserable, their enemy becoming increasingly more powerful and a hunger gnawing at their stomachs.

Russian food kitchens are moved near the front lines, ensuring their starving enemy can smell the hot meals provided for their soldiers. The Germans and their allies are down to 1000 calories a day, the city rationing providing limited bread, soup and horse flesh.

Loudspeakers deployed across the front sound a clock ticking, a voice announcing that ‘Every seven seconds a German soldier dies in Russia.’ The loudspeakers play twenty four hours a day.

Having spent thirty years studying World War 2 and in particular, the Russian Front, these offerings are based on historical fact. The characters are fictitious, attempting to portray a realistic account of what the battle would have been like for individual soldiers.

All units and actions are in accordance with actual events, including propaganda, deployment and individual division engagements. Snipers, aircraft, artillery and tank actions are all included.

Bloody Stalingrad is the trilogy of Bloody Iced Bullet, Bloody Rattenkrieg and Bloody Kessel.

The author aims to provide a thoroughly enjoyable and imaginative reading experience at an affordable price for the reader. All three works from the author's World War 2 Series concentrating on Stalingrad have achieved Best Seller status on Amazon in the UK and many more stories are outlined.

Imagination is personal, free and to be cherished.

Excellent fictional account of combat on the Eastern Front
By TJ Diamond
Gritty and determined. An excellent story of a squad of German and allied soldiers fighting j n Stalingrad. Not much fiction is written about this brutal and tragic episode of the war. McGregor does a wonderful job of introducing the historic context and presenting these intriguing characters. I look forward to reading more about this squad.

A completely different perspective on the war from an American reader.
By James McCurdy
It was difficult for me to put this book down as reading usually helps me to sleep. Not so with this book. I now look forward to author's other books. The only difficulty I encountered was deciphering some of the German language used. An appendix listing equipment, weapons, and other reference hardware would also have been useful.

Fantastic writing
By Amazon Customer
This is the third book I have read about this battle and it is as good as the other two. The others being the more celebrated of them. One having been made into a movie. This book is a much more graphic depiction of the appalling conditions Hitler made his army suffer. Plus this book wasn't centered on any snipers.

528 pages of great songs under one cover for under 20 bucks. But easy? Depends on how you define that.
By Sharon Isch
I love this collection. It has so many songs in it that I like to play that aren't in any of my other songbooks. I love that even though it's big and fat and NOT spiral bound, its pages nonetheless lie flat wherever I open them to; that its sturdy cover and its binding hold up under frequent use, that they didn't skimp on the quality of the paper and printing. And that you can get it here for under twenty bucks.

But what exactly, you may wonder, does Hal Leonard mean by "easy" piano? Well, I'd say it means that if you can read and play standard sheet music, you can probably play anything here. Which I guess I'd put at around Grade 3 competence level and beyond.

It's really too, too bad the seller isn't offering one of Amazon's "inside looks" here like they did on the Amazon product page for an earlier version of this book, so you could check out the contents list and see what you'd be getting. Maybe I can help a little with that. I'm not going to rattle off all 150 titles, but here are 50 of them, which should give you a pretty good idea whether this is your kind of songbook:

Always on My Mind, And I Love Her, Bewitched, By the Time I Get to Phoenix, Candle in the Wind, Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man, Climb Every Mountain, Daddy's Little Girl, A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes, Fields of Gold, Fly Me to the Moon, From a Distance, Georgia on My Mind, I Have Dreamed, I Just Called to Say I Love You, I Left My Heart in San Francisco, I Will Wait for You, I'll Be Seeing You, If You Go Away, Imagination, I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song, In My Room, In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning, I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face, The Last Waltz, Let it Be Me, Look to the Rainbow, Memory from Cats, Moon River, My Funny Valentine, Oh What a Beautiful Mornin,' The Rainbow Connection, Release Me, She, Some Day My Prince Will Come, Some Enchanted Evening, Somewhere My Love, Somewhere Out There, Stardust, Tears in Heaven, Tenderly, Tennesee Waltz, Till There Was You, A Time for Us, True Love, Try to Remember, What a Wonderful World, What Kind of Fool Am I?, When You Wish Upon a Star, Yesterday, You Light Up My Life,

Easy to Play Familiar Songs
By Ronald K. Ridley
Many old familiar favor songs in this book. I love the easy to follow scores in big print. I played and sang along with a few of these music sheets. It would have been nice to be a in spiral bending, but the book still turned fairly easily. Turning pages did slow me down, when playing the music. If I was to play this for someone, I would have to copy off the sheets for a complete music piece and tape them together so that I can see them all out across in front of me. It would have been nice if they had fold out sheets of each complete music piece so that you could see them all together without having to turn pages. I like the idea of chord letters at the top of the measures, which will make it easier for me to play the ukulele along with the piano. I especially like the one note or two note chords in the bass clef inside of a four or five note chord and many notes in each measure of the bass clef. There are easy to follow songs and will give me many hours of joy playing them. I might download the kindle version as well. This would make it easy to take on trips on the kindle and I could possible perform on ocean cruise lines for free trips.

A perfect book for music lovers--well arranged--easy to play--great standards.
By Myrna G.
A huge pile of songs. It was so big, that I cut off the spine, took it to Office Depot and had holes punched for a notebook. As an intermediate piano student, the level is easy to moderate. The songs are well written and I like it that there are some songs where the left hand has plenty of work to do and not just one or 2 notes to keep the melody.

It is one of the best books on the old standards of the early years (30s, 40s, 50s). My piano teacher's face lit up when she saw it. She said this was one of the best books I had purchased since I love the old movies and tunes of the past. I don't like to scratch up my piano, so I choose a few songs at the time, copy them and place the papers on my piano rack. A lot of the songs are 4 pages in length because of the large format. If the song is a favorite, I find a photo of the popular singer and paste it on the front of the song sheet.

If you like the 60s, 70s and 80s you will find favorites from that era as well. It is a good choice and well arrange by various arrangers. You won't be sorry you own it.

Ever wondered what space is really like? Thanks to his 25 years of training for, flying in, consulting on, and writing and speaking about space, astronaut and spacewalker Tom Jones can answer that question and many others. What do you feel on liftoff? What is weightlessness? Where do you sleep in space? Can you see the Great Wall of China? Jones answers every question you have ever had about space in Ask the Astronaut. His entertaining blend of wit, personal experience, and technical expertise shines in each answer, and together all the answers illuminate the true space experience from start to finish. His engaging and informative responses remind readers of historic space achievements, acquaint them with exciting new ambitions, make them feel like they have experienced space firsthand, and even inspire an urge to explore space themselves. Jones covers everything from the training process for new astronaut candidates and the physical sensations and challenges of rocketing into orbit to what it's like to live, work, and walk in space. Jones also explores the future of spaceflight, both professional and commercial, in the years to come. Ask the Astronaut is a delight for all readers, especially "armchair astronauts" and younger, 21st century space explorers.

Gr 7 Up—The former space shuttle astronaut and planetary scientist has written a treasure trove of answers to FAQs about modern space flight. The text is well organized, with questions categorized into chapters that explain the different steps in the process of aspiring to, training for, and living and working in space. Jones answers scores of questions that he has received over the years at public forums, from "Where should we send astronauts next in space?" to "Have astronauts ever seen space aliens?" Most of the book focuses on NASA's space shuttle voyages to the International Space Station, because this is Jones's greatest area of experience as an astronaut. The technical descriptions in the answers are a bit complex, but the firsthand details and comprehensive back matter make this an ideal addition to any junior high or high school library. VERDICT A fascinating look at space travel that will excite budding STEM students.—Kelly Kingrey-Edwards, Blinn Junior College, Brenham, TX

KIRKUS REVIEWS
A veteran astronaut weighs in on queries ranging from how the universe began to how to pee in a spacesuit. The hundreds of questions are grouped in broadly topical chapters but otherwise arranged in no particular order. They cover an astronaut's qualifications, training, and work; what it feels like to travel into space and to live there; the nature of the universe and our near-future prospects for exploring it. Jones draws on his experiences on four space shuttle flights between 1994 and 2001 for his answers, which are usually fairly lengthy, though he plainly leaves a few things out: if "NASA astronauts wait an average of five years between missions," why were his so much closer together? Will he ever go to space again? "Not if I want to stay married." Still, he often drills down to the nitty-gritty: what's in the International Space Station's tool kit? A long list, beginning with vise grips and including "a crowbar, a fiber optic boroscope, torque tip drivers." He doesn't trumpet personal opinions, but they can be found in lukewarm responses to questions about space camp and space tourism, as well as a cogent argument for continuing our exploration of the high frontier: "We will be struck again by an asteroid." Plenty of small space photos and snapshots of the author and other astronauts at work and play are interspersed. Fine browsing for space geeks. (Nonfiction. 11-14)

Great for all levels of reading and curiosity!
By Hiawhatha
My son declared that in 2040, he would be heading to Mars in the new Z-2 Spacesuit. I will take him at his word, as he is an incredibly curious and pretty intelligent 10 year old. When this book popped up, I jumped at the chance to grab it. I am so glad I did.

The sections are all question and answers. Each question is simple and one or two sentences. Each answer can be one or a few paragraphs. The photos sprinkled in are a nice break. The level of reading is perfect and simple, but not so simple that a kid that's 8-12 will be bored. If they truly want to know any of these things, they will be intrigued. The sections cover all aspects from Aspiring to Space, Training and Getting to Space, different ships, living and working in space, risks, returning from space and coming back to earth and a few more.

After devouring the first chapter about aspirations, education, and all things on how to become an astronaut, my son put the book down only to eat dinner. Then back to the book. He would stop reading and talked to us about space food. Then he would come later and talk to me about duct tape in space, using Russia as a space taxi of sorts and so on.

We looked up information on training at Johnson Space Center. We read up on old missions and names, astronauts and space ships. This book continues to lead us down a rabbit hole of information and we are enjoying the heck out of it. I highly recommend this book for younger kids that would enjoy hearing their parents read a little out loud here and there. For older kids who might not love to read, this book gives great opportunity to just pick up and put down at intervals, or read just a little a night.

Thanks Mr. Jones, for giving us this cool gift!

The Recommended Age Range Should be 10 to Grandma!
By McBean
Back in the late 60s or early 70s, I was a student majoring in Physics at California State University, Long Beach. A few astronauts came to the college to talk about the space program. There was a huge audience and everyone was spellbound. Although we were all brilliant and looking forward to the future, we seemed to be most interested in how they went to the bathroom. We all turned into fourth graders. I seem to remember something about a big ball of urine that broke free and floated around the cabin. I've Googled it, but can't seem to find anything specific about the incident during that era, but it's definitely etched in the folds of my brain.

So, when I was given the opportunity to review this book, I figured I'd skim through and then share it with some of my teenaged friends. Well, I'm not giving up this book. It is one of the most fascinating reads ever. Each chapter -- and, yes, there's a lot of information about peeing and pooping -- is incredibly entertaining and educational. Tom Jones shares his earliest memories of first becoming interested in the space program, through his studies and applications for the program, his experiences in space, information about other flights and programs, and the future. At no point does he talk down to the reader. There is enough science plus enough day-to-day information to engage anyone.

I sometimes wish I'd pursued a spot in the space program, but I get car sick -- when I'm driving -- so that probably would have been a bad idea.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. My title speaks my feelings. This book can be enjoyed by anyone from 10 to 100.

Thanks, Tom Jones, for sharing your experiences and insights. To infinity and beyond!

My Year of Meats, by Ruth L. Ozeki

A cross-cultural tale of two women brought together by the intersections of television and industrial agriculture, fertility and motherhood, life and love—the breakout hit by the celebrated author of A Tale for the Time Being

Ruth Ozeki’s mesmerizing debut novel has captivated readers and reviewers worldwide. When documentarian Jane Takagi-Little finally lands a job producing a Japanese television show that just happens to be sponsored by an American meat-exporting business, she uncovers some unsavory truths about love, fertility, and a dangerous hormone called DES. Soon she will also cross paths with Akiko Ueno, a beleaguered Japanese housewife struggling to escape her overbearing husband. Hailed by USA Today as “rare and provocative” and awarded the Kirayama Prize for Literature of the Pacific Rim, My Year of Meats is a modern-day take on Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle for fans of Michael Pollan, Margaret Atwood, and Barbara Kingsolver.

Amazon.com Review
At first glance, a novel that promises to expose the unethical practices of the American meat industry may not be at the top of your reading list, but Ruth Ozeki's debut, My Year of Meats is well worth a second look. Like the author, the novel's protagonist, Jane Takagi-Little, is a Japanese-American documentary filmmaker; like Ozeki, who was once commissioned by a beef lobbying group to make television shows for the Japanese market, Jane is invited to work on a Japanese television show meant to encourage beef consumption via the not-so-subliminal suggestion that prime rib equals a perfect family: TO: AMERICAN RESEARCH STAFF
FROM: Tokyo Office
DATE: January 5, 1991
RE: My American Wife!...

Here is list of IMPORTANT THINGS for My American Wife!

DESIRABLE THINGS:
1. Attractiveness, wholesomeness, warm personality
2. Delicious meat recipe (NOTE: Pork and other meats is second class meats, so please remember this easy motto: "Pork is Possible, but Beef is Best!")
3. Attractive, docile husband
4. Attractive, obedient children
5. Attractive, wholesome lifestyle
6. Attractive, clean house...

UNDESIRABLE THINGS:
1. Physical imperfections
2. Obesity
3. Squalor
4. Second class peoples

The series, My American Wife!, initally seems like a dream come true for Jane as she criss-crosses the United States filming a different American family each week for her Japanese audience. Naturally, the emphasis is on meat, and Ozeki has fun with out-there recipes such as rump roast in coke and beef fudge; but as Jane becomes more familiar with her subject, she becomes increasingly aware of the beef industry's widespread practice of using synthetic estrogens on their cattle and determines to sabotage the program.

Cut to Tokyo where Akiko Ueno struggles through the dull misery of life with her brutish husband, who happens to be in charge of the show's advertising. After seeing one of Jane's subversive episodes about a vegetarian lesbian couple, Akiko gets in touch and the two women plot to expose the meat industry's hazardous practices. Romance, humor, intrigue, and even a message--My Year of Meats has it all. This is a book that even a vegetarian would love.

From Library Journal
As a writer, Ozeki draws upon her knowledge in documentary filmmaking cleverly to bring the worlds of two women together by utilizing the U.S. meat industry as a central link. Alternating between the voices of Jane (in the United States) and Akiko Ueno, the wife of Jane's boss (in Japan), Ozeki draws parallels in the lives of these two women through beef, love, television, and their desire to have children. Ozeki skillfully tackles hard-pressing issues such as the use and effects of hormones in the beef industry and topics such as cultural differences, gender roles, and sexual exploitation. Her work is unique in presentation yet moving and entertaining. Highly recommended for general fiction collections. [BOMC alternate selection.]?Shirley N. Quan, Orange Cty. P.L., Stanton, C.

From Booklist
Jane Tagaki-Little is a struggling documentary filmmaker who is overjoyed to get a steady gig producing a Japanese television show, My American Wife, sponsored by BEEF-EX, a lobby group for the meat industry. As she travels through the Midwest looking for guest hosts for the show--" wholesome" housewives who embody American values and make mouthwatering recipes (e.g., beef fudge!)--she gets an eye-opening look at the meat industry and their unwholesome practices. Using the TV show to launch a subversive attack, Jane's next and most popular segment features vegetarian lesbians. Meanwhile, the wife of the Japanese rep for the show dutifully watches the program, but what she learns from the American families presented is that she does not have to settle for a brutal, loveless marriage. Ozeki's first novel has some fine touches, including a pleasing prose style, the feisty, independent protagonist, and her modern relationship with her attractive musician boyfriend. However, in striving for complexity, Ozeki overloads her narrative with too many issues (e.g., fertility, wife battering), and her intermittent diatribes on cattle ranching bring her story to a screeching halt. Ozeki is no Upton Sinclair, but since our new national pastime appears to be bashing the meat industry (move over, Oprah), this quirky novel will no doubt find an audience. A major publicity campaign will help: the book is a BOMC alternate selection, and Ozeki, herself a documentary filmmaker, will be doing a 10-city reading tour. Joanne Wilkinson

such a great beginning, only to deteriorate into ground beef
By A Customer
It is quite rare for me to be so completely enthralled and delighted by the 17th page of a book, and one from a debut novelist to boot. Which is why my disappointment at the appallingly bad last half of the book is so acute.
First, if I had to rate the first half on creativity, humor, style, etc. I would surely give this book FIVE stars. Ozeki is a beautiful writer, the phrases and descriptions are exquisite and delightful. The humor sharp, acerbic. In particular, the depiction of cultural clashes between the Japanese crew in America was extremely funny and well-done. Much insight, real honesty and real verisimilitude. And the segments on American families--beautiful, glorious, heartwarming.
But what happened?! As I moved toward the end, my grief was palpable: I cringed. I wailed. I wanted desparately to go back to the beginning. For me, everything went downhill after the silly relationship with Sloane. The main character Jane, who WAS so brash, funny and aggressive, starts to become wimpy, wishy-washy and clueless in the arms of Sloane. Should she have the baby or not? Should she commit to this guy or not? It became a case study of post-feminist angst and it tired pretty quickly.
Secondly, what happened to all those three-dimensional characters? While I agree with the author's views on the beef industry, the characters came off as fake, superficial and cliche. Evil cattle rancher. Busty, young stripper-wife of cattle rancher. Evil wife-beating Japanese man. Timid Japanese housewife. She pits heroic, "good" stock characters against the "bad" cardboard villains of the beef industry. For e.g., the quiet. principled truck driver Dave who points out all the evils of the slaughterhouse seemed less like a solid character and more like a convenient plot device to get the anti-beef lecturing across. Akiko and John start off as delightful characters who also disintegrate into a syrupy soap opera cliche. Ultimately, Ozeki insults our intelligence by not letting us make our own decisions and does an injustice to the characters she originally created; the effect is as jarring and disturbing as a cattle prod.
That was the main problem of this novel. It started off as cynical and witty, but couldn't escape from sentimentality and a need for self-righteous closure. Bunny, Rose, the lesbian couple, etc. all cram themselves in to fit into a plotline that is more ideological rant than art. Ozeki backs off from her challenging narrative to give us a nice, fake bow at the end--somuch like TV! Despite the "hard-hitting documentary" style she professes, Jane (and Ozeki) are really just ... for the "happy ending." That means constructing a villain (the beef industry) at the expense of a good story. Even the graphic violence and bloodiness of the beef industry she tried to gruesomely convey, is all just conveniently part of a sugary-syrupy plot in the end. After Jane loses her baby, reunites with her lover, comesto terms with her Japanese mother, I felt like throwing this book into the offal and refuse of the cows she was describing--BUT not because it was bad! In fact, the first half could be described as 'brilliant'. But because this book let me down so much. That is an even bigger betrayal to me than to have written a bad book from the start. What could have been a promising debut has deteriorated into the plot of a soap opera with an ultimately dissatisfying ending.

Much more than just meat
By karolinatx
I, too, greatly enjoyed My Year of Meats. Though the "meat" side of the novel was impossible to miss -- it is, obviously, crucial to the plot -- I found that it had very little to do with what made the book so enjoyable. I'd seen the book around in bookstores for years, but never bought it because I thought that I had the meat industry covered, having read Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. Don't make the same mistake I made! My Year of Meats is SO much more. Jane Takagi-Little is a documentarian who accepts an offer to make a series of half-hour shows for Japanese television entitled "My American Wife!" and sponsored by the American beef industry. She takes the opportunity to do more than simply showcase beef, repeatedly breaking orders from Japan and filming the most unusual and intriguing "American Wives" she can find -- a couple in Louisiana who have adopted Asian children, and even vegeterian lesbians! In the process, Jane learns a lot about the beef industry, and begins to plan to subversively expose the shocking details meat-eaters would rather not know. Unlike some other reviewers, I didn't find this part of the novel to be excessively preachy; it fit in with the plot nicely. Along the way, the reader also learns about Jane's private life and what makes her tick, fleshing out her character nicely.
On the other side of the globe we have Akiko Ueno, the wife of one of Jane's bosses. Through her eyes the reader is able to learn much about the Japanese culture. Akiko is abused by her husband, who she was set up with by her boss and married out of obedience. Eventually the lives of Jane and Akiko intertwine with fascinating end to the novel. Set to exquisite sections of The Pillow Book, My Year of Meats is a captivating read.

Funny! But ultimately too self-indulgent.
By Jonker
I stayed up late to finish this book, and have heartily recommended it to friends. But I do have to give a mixed review.
First and foremost, it was one of the funniest books I've read in a long time. At one point, I started laughing out loud (to my horror -- I was reading on the subway and no doubt looked like an idiot). I also thought the literary device of uniting the Japanese and U.S. portions of the story through those great faxed memos was clever. The whole thing just felt fresh and creative. Simply put, I really enjoyed reading this.
On the other hand, however, by the end of the book the development of the story and the characters had pretty much given way to heavy-handed moralizing about the meat industry, or at least the author's perception of the industry, which I suspect may be a bit exaggerated. Perhaps exaggeration is the primary flaw here. The characters were exaggerated to an extent that caused me to distrust the author and discount her perspective. And did we really have to be bludgeoned quite so hard with the Wal-Mart as Evil Empire theme? Finally, I thought that the way all the diverse characters and episodes tied together into a big happy ending was unduly contrived.
Despite these points, my final impression is that it was a gripping, worthwhile, and memorable read, and I will be watching for Ms. Ozeki's next book.
