A wonderful addition to the sci-fi graphic novel genre

The thing I love about a really great graphic novel is how the artists/writers use the interplay between text and art to each component’s full advantage. And in Electromagnate: The Book of Rebel Nations, John Rap shows that he knows how to use words and graphic elements to bring this compelling sci-fi drama to life (though I should mention that several artists were involved, all of whom are generously thanked at the end of the book).

The storyline is an intriguing one, especially considering our increasingly connected global society. The more we allow our lives and beings to be enmeshed with the transfer of information and data, the more we become the information and data. We then become vulnerable to whoever derives power (monetary or otherwise) from controlling that data (i.e., us).

I don’t want to give away too much of the plot arc, because it honestly is a fascinating one to discover. But I have to comment on the book’s brilliant use of the interaction between the words and the illustrations. First off, the illustrations are simply gorgeous. The illustrators all have a fabulous sense of color, and the emotions just pop off the page. Also, I really loved how sometimes the balance of words to illustrations fluctuated, which then tended to bolster the overall dramatic impact.

If you love graphic novels or are just curious about them, give Electromagnate a shot!

A beautiful triumvirate of a graphic novel

I'm not the greatest fan of graphic novels in the world. Really, I'm not. But I got this and I do not regret it in the slightest bit.

With graphic novels, I believe there is a triumvirate to judging its quality, drawing/colors, story/plot, and synthesis.

The color in this wonderful book is brightly lit. The contrasting colors work to literally illustrate how the story unfolds. As an avid reader of words, not graphics, I found myself absorbing the details seeping through the pages. I couldn't stop! I cannot begin to fathom the time and energy spent on creating piece of art. Artwork 5/5

Storywise, the graphic novel falls slightly behind the artwork. Slightly. The story is indeed intriguing. One would not be able to finish this book in one go if only for the colors. I found myself at multiple moments wondering what will next, as I scramble for the next page. What fall slightly behind the artwork is the, at times, mind befuddling, turn of events. However, I wonder if this is a culture issue. I haven't read more than three or four graphics novels in my life, and for that reason, I might find it hard to follow trains of thought prone to exist in graphic novels. Story/Plot 4.5/5

Synthesis is how I consider the artwork and the story to come together. Alone on each of its own, great; but together, they can be beautiful. And this is where Electromagnate really shines. Through the whole book, I could not but marvel how these pages swooped by. Synthesis 5/5

Overall speaking, if you can get this book now before it runs out of stock, I highly recommend it.

Flat Earth Star Wars-Interesting Tale

I have read many science fiction graphic tales but none of them captured my interest like this one. The pictures added are highly illustrative, colorful and very relevant to the incident described. The story is woven around book flat earth theory. Though really that's just one component of electric universe theory. The story flows based on the construction of Tesla's global relay grid and I must say that this book is full of action. The best science fiction fantasy I have ever read and I love it. Recommended.

About the Author
John K. Brilhart has written numerous academic and mass market articles, is the author of several texts and is Professor Emeritus of the University of Nebraska.

Gloria J. Galanes is Associate Professor of Communication and Mass Media at Southwest Missouri St. University and has received the University’s Faculty Excellence in Teaching and the Outstanding Graduate Faculty Member awards.

Katherine L. Adams is Professor of Speech Communication at California State University, Fresno, where she received a Meritorious Promise and Performance award in 1989. She has served as their Graduate Coordinator since 1989. She received her Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Utah under the direction of B. Aubrey Fisher. She has authored four instructor’s manuals in interpersonal and small group communication and most recently, this group communication book with Gloria Galanes. She has published articles in the areas of conversational analysis and interpersonal communication. Currently she is an associate editor for Communication Reports and The Western Journal of Communication. She participates, at all levels, in the Western States Communication Association and Speech Communication Association and teaches in the areas of interpersonal communication, communication theory, small group communication, and research methods.

50 Lush Color Photos Are Worth More Than 50,000 Words

Although this book has many elements, its core is the Harley-Davidson as a design. The photographs are mostly of 50 different models, focused on the motorcycle alone, done with remarkable lighting to create exquisite detail and color. You will feel like you are visiting a museum of mint Harleys as you "stroll" from page to page while sitting comfortably in your favorite chair. The book is strengthened by some classic Harley photos that you have seen before, such as from Easy Rider. There is also a good overview of the development of the company, key technologies, and a timeline of when different bikes were introduced. For those who don't know about Harleys, you also have a glossary to help you interpret, and a list of contacts to help you get even more information.
"People remember their first Harley-Davidson." As Hugo Wilson points out, that's because "Harleys look different, sound different and certainly ride different to other motorcycles." One of the strengths of the book is that it provides many helpful details about the bases of those differences. I could literally "hear" a Harley every time I looked at one of the images. And now I know why they sound that way. You will, too, when you read this exciting book.
"Their extraordinary appeal makes small boys dream and grown men save." Harley-Davidsons clearly draw on our sense of adventure, our desire for freedom, and our need to be different. I am not an expert on motorcycles but have spent many happy hours on them. I could feel the thundering power in my legs as I looked at the Harley in Terminator II, the 74FLHB Electra Glide in blue from 1965, the FLHS Electra Glide from 1988, the FLSTF Fat Boy from 1999, and especially the Buell X1 Lightning from 1999.
To me the best page was 184 where there is a cutaway of the famous V-twin engine, along with a good description of each element. This is the heart of what makes a Harley a Harley, and I was glad to learn more about this wonderful design.
After you have finished enjoying this book and taken a ride on your Harley to celebrate (don't have one yet? . . . well, start dreaming and saving . . .), I suggest that you think about other ways you can enjoy your spirit of adventure and desire for the open road. Riding a Harley doesn't get you all the exercise you could use. Are there any hiking trails that you could ride your Harley to? In that way, you could have a double adventure. Plus, you can have even more enjoyment with your family and friends while you hike. If you haven't hiked the Grand Canyon yet down to the Colorado River, that would make a great ride/hike combination. Just do it! -- (but do plan ahead, you'll enjoy it more if you do).

A quality look at the history of Harley

Once you hear that iconic rumbling, you know there is a Harley-Davidson around. Harley-Davidsons are everywhere, and there is a solid following of motorcycle enthusiasts all across the world. The Ultimate Harley-Davidson book breaks down each model decade by decade. It is a wonderful format for Harley-Davidson lovers who enjoy reading the history that goes along with these wonderful machines. The entire book is bright and bold with complete and accurate information and outstanding photographs from past to present.

From the early days of the company to the days of Easy Ride, the reader gets a deep look into Harley-Davidson culture, specs, and mechanics. "The arrival of high-spec Japanese imports had another consequence. People wondered why, if Japanese 125cc machine could have an electric starter, and American 1200cc machine could not. Harley's response was to fit an electric starter to its FL models from 1965 to create the Electra Glide, possibly the most famous motorcycle model ever built. It even had a film named after it, Electra Glide in Blue (1973)."

Hugo Wilson, author and motorcycle enthusiast, has written many best-selling books on motorcycles and is the editor of the United Kingdom's top selling motorcycle magazine "Bikes". I think of him as a British Allan Girdler. Girdler is an American author and motorcycle enthusiast who has educated me well on the history of the Harley-Davidson Xr-750 and Harley Davidson Sportster.

Ultimate Harley-Davidson is a great collectors item or gift! This book is well planned, and the decade by decade breakdown will help Harley lovers explore each era. The index is also bright and vivid for easy searching.

This really is a beautiful book. Lots of great pictures and the explanations to back them up. If you want a good introduction to learning the world of Harley, this is a great place to start.

About the Author
Jeffrey A. Kottler, Ph.D., is Professor in the Counseling Department at California State University, Fullerton, and one of the foremost authorities and prolific writers in the fields of counseling, psychology, and education. He is the best-selling author of more than 80 nonfiction books that deal with a wide range of subjects including personal development, group leadership, professional development of psychotherapists and teachers, social justice, true crime, and a variety of contemporary issues related to helping and healing, truth and lies, creativity, transformative travel, and stress management. In addition to his private practice, Jeffrey has worked as a teacher, counselor, and therapist in preschool, middle school, mental health center, crisis center, university, and community college settings. He has served as a Fulbright Scholar and Senior Lecturer in Peru and Iceland, teaching counseling theory and practice. He has also served as a visiting professor in New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, Nepal, and other countries. In addition, Jeffrey is President of Empower Nepali Girls, a foundation that provides scholarships for at-risk children in Nepal.

David S. Shepard, Ph.D., has been practicing as a counselor in the Los Angeles area for more than two decades, working with a full range of issues including adjustment problems, relationship issues, struggles with substance abuse, depression, anxiety, and personality disorders. His particular specialty is in gender-sensitive couples therapy--incorporating scholarship on the socialization experiences of both men and women to ensure that both sexes are equally comfortable in and get maximum benefit from couples work. Prior to his counseling career, David worked as a screenwriter in the film and television industry, where he specialized in children's animation. He is also Associate Professor of Counseling at California State University, Fullerton, where he does research in counselor education, the relationship of counseling theory to clinical practice, gender issues in counseling, and the uses of film in teaching counseling.

Superb!

This is one of the best textbooks I've had the pleasure to use, and believe me, I've used a lot. It is clear and well-written, and in reading it you understand not just the information it presents but also why that information is important. Each chapter contains many anonymous comments called "Voices from the Field," written by practicing mental health counselors. These "voices" give a sometimes gritty but always authentic perspective that grounds and comforts the student. Here is one example:

Of all the theories I've used--and believe me, I've used a bunch--REBT is the one I found most useful
in my own life. I don't even practice it that much anymore with my clients, but I still use it every day
inside my own head. So often, I get down on myself because I feel like i'm failing my clients or not
doing as good a job as I should. Then I hear Ellis's voice in my head, confronting me about my
"shoulds" and absolute judgments. It really does work miracles.

Why don't I use it anymore with my clients? I don't know. I guess I just got bored with it after a
while. It's not that it stopped working; really, it's powerful stuff. It's just that I got tired disputing the
same old irrational beliefs over and over. I moved on to something new and more dynamic. But I
still use it sometimes with clients who really seem like good candidates for a more confrontational,
thinking approach.

When I read this account I could almost feel the counselor's weariness and self-doubt. Kottler should be commended for making a strong effort to portray the realities that students will face when they enter the "real world."

This is the second book I have read by Kottler. After a couple of years in a counseling MA program, you start to differentiate between poorly written texts and those that are helpful. Kottler is an engaging writer (no small feat for a textbook) and the "voices from the field" are found throughout the book. For a neophyte counselor, it's reassuring to hear from others in the field whose contributions reflect your own concerns. I took one star away because of the order of chapter topics, which I think could have been organized in a way that flowed better, but I would definitely recommend this book.

Fantastic book for anyone entering the field of counseling.

I was required to purchase the book for graduate school and was disappointed at first when I saw it was a textbook. However, the book is so interesting I just sat down and read it even before I started class. The author provides so much information about counseling and the personal stories from counselors in the field is a fantastic feature. All of the information in the book is exactly what you want to know as a new counselor. This is a textbook that I will definitely keep and recommend to others.

I re-read Moby Dick every year, and along with Charles Olson's "The Stormy Petrel and the Whale. Some Origins of Moby-Dick" Thomas Nickerson's THE LOSS OF THE SHIP " ESSEX" SUNK BY A WHALE AND THE ORDEAL OF THE CREW IN OPEN BOATS are the best texts for approaching the Essex tragedy and the poetics that led to the creation of Moby Dick.

What is most stark is when Nickerson holds pain and passion in check and records with as much control as he can the bizarre and violent behaviour caused by the malnutrition magnesium deficiency of the crew, their trials with diarrhoea, blackouts, weakness, boils, and other maladies. And he records in detail their ultimate descent into cannibalism.

The Nantucket Historical Society should be applauded for their efforts in publishing this neglected monumental contribution to history and scholarship, and both economic historians and literary scholars of Melville will now enjoy decades of a refreshed primary source to engage their critical and scholarly analysis.

Has become the backbone of our curriculum. Is one of the few books that bridges primary care and osteopathic technique. A welcome treasure to the field. Cannot wait for the next edition. Clinical neurology, another great LANGE textbook

This is a easy to read short text on neurology. It covers all areas, but is not overly technical. This is a great book for general practioners to review neurology or medical students prepairing for boards. The topics are up to date and well referenced. The book has great pictures and diagrams, and follows the typical "LANGE" format. This is a great book to read quickly in one months time or during a clinical rotation.
