About the Author

Michael Cohen is the cofounder of Nuance Communications. He has played a variety of roles at Nuance, including creation of the Professional Services organization and the Dialog Research and Development group. Michael is a popular speaker and a consulting professor at Stanford University. He has published more than seventy papers, holds eight patents.

James Giangola is an industrial linguist, who designs, researches, and mentors others in creating VUIs that reflect the linguistic features and principles that shape everyday, human-to-human conversations. An innovator in prompt-writing and dialog design, James has ten years of experience teaching languages and linguistics, and maintains a consulting practice.

Jennifer Balogh is a speech consultant at Nuance Communications, where she designs and evaluates interfaces for spoken language systems. She also conducts research on dialog design techniques and holds several patents. Jennifer is a university lecturer and frequent contributor to conferences and journals.

In the past decade, there has been an explosion in the creation and commercial deployment of voice user interfaces, especially for use over the telephone. Voice user interfaces (VUIs) use speech technology to provide callers with access to information, allow them to perform transactions, and support communications.

This proliferation is driven by a number of factors: customer dissatisfaction with touchtone interactions, a growing desire for mobile access, the need for enterprises to more effectively and inexpensively meet their customers' needs, and the development of speech technology that is finally robust and reliable enough to deliver effective and reliable interaction in well-defined domains.

At the beginning of this decade of growth (starting around 1994), the biggest obstacle that needed to be overcome was skepticism about the capabilities of the technology. Speech technology had been promised for decades and had disappointed many times. The enterprises that could potentially improve their customer service and save money, as well as the venture capital firms that could fund the early start-ups, needed proof points. Within a few years, many such proof points existed: Millions of phone calls every day were being handled successfully by speech technology. Although technology improvement will continue to play a key role in providing better experiences for end users, increased business value to enterprises, and new capabilities enabling new types of applications, it is no longer the key bottleneck to growth of the speech industry.

The biggest challenge now is the design of the user interface. There are too few practitioners who have the knowledge and skills to create all the systems needed and to advance our understanding as new technology enables new capabilities. Current practitioners come from a wide variety of backgrounds: speech technology, user interface design, cognitive psychology, linguistics, and software development. All these fields have contributed to our current level of understanding of voice user interface design. In fact, the field has benefited substantially from the diversity of influences. However, the need to pull together information from diverse fields has made it difficult to codify and teach the rationale for design.

In this book we aim to offer in one place much of the background information needed for practitioners to design specific applications and to contribute to the advance of the field. We try to take a principled approach to deriving best practices, with the hope that designers will then have a basis for approaching new design situations and new technologies.

Organization of The Book

Given that our primary focus is to teach VUI design, we chose to organize it according to the design methodology we recommend. The parts are as follows:

Part I, introduction: Chapters 1-3 provide the necessary introductory material, including an overview of voice user interfaces and design issues, a description of the technology, and a high-level view of the design methodology we detail throughout the remainder of the book.

Part II, definition phase: Chapters 4-7 cover the definition phase of a project: discovering the requirements and making high-level design decisions that will guide the detailed design.

Part III, design phase: Chapters 8-14 cover the detailed design phase. Design principles are covered in detail, with many examples of how to apply them to real applications.

Part IV, realization phase: Chapters 15-18 cover the realization phase: development, testing, and tuning. A number of issues that are unique to voice user interface design, such as grammar development, are covered in detail.

Each part begins with a chapter covering the methodological details for that phase of design. Following that are a few chapters describing the design principles and approaches relevant to that phase. The final chapter of each section presents a design example.

Audience

This book is meant to address a variety of audiences:

Practitioners: The primary audience is practitioners or those intending to become practitioners. We try to lay the groundwork so that beginners can understand all the material. The book should provide value to both experienced and inexperienced designers. Practitioners can benefit from reading all the chapters.

Students of human-computer interfaces: Students studying human-computer interface design will find that VUIs have many things in common with other types of user interfaces. On the other hand, a number of issues and design approaches are unique to voice user interfaces. The entire book is useful to students, although Chapters 1-4, 6, 8-13, and 15-16 stand out as most important.

Business managers: Business managers making decisions about how speech technology can best meet the needs of their organizations will benefit most from Chapters 1-4 and 6.

Project managers: Project managers who must understand the steps in designing and deploying an application will benefit most from Chapters 1-4, 6-8, 14-15, and 18.

Very comprehensive

This book describes a methodology and gives pieces of advice for developing speech applications. The focus is on telephony applications. The book is based on the experience of the authors in developing such applications at Nuance.
The book is organized into four parts:
1. Introduction
2. Requirement gathering
3. Detailed design
4. Development and Tuning
Each part starts with a description of the general principles guiding the development of a speech application. They end with an "applied" example showing how these principles are used in a real application.
The introduction provides an overview of speech technology and an overview of the methodology (requirements, detailed design, development/tuning) used to develop a speech application. This methodology is used as a guide for the rest of the book.
The requirement gathering part covers meeting with the company that wants to deploy the speech application and getting information from them. The same kind of information as for other software projects is required: business case, target customers, environment integration, scope of the system, etc. Two interesting additions to the usual process are:
1. Specifying the persona. How should the system be perceived (serious, funny, etc.)? This will impact the prompts, the selection of the voice actor, and the design of the dialog flow.
2. Specifying the type of interaction: system directed or user directed. The former relies on grammars. The latter relies on SLM and robust parsing. This has a huge influence on design and realization.
The detailed design phase is concerned with designing the dialog flow, the prompts and the grammars. The authors put an emphasis in developing systems that (1) sound good and (2) are efficient. Sounding good means developing prompts that abide to spoken language rules (by opposition to written language) and paying attention to prosody. The sections on prompt design and prosody are very informative. Efficiency is ensured by making the dialog flow nicely. Techniques include thinking in terms of user scenarios, providing shortcuts to common tasks, educating users about efficient ways of using the system. Efficiency is also improved by helping users to recover from errors efficiently. Techniques here include quick confirmation strategies, providing help prompts, and providing access to main menu/operator.
The development and tuning part focuses mainly on tuning grammars and working with the voice actor. Tuning the grammar is done to ensure appropriate coverage while maintaining good recognition accuracy. Tuning must be based on real data since it is difficult to predict how people will use the system. Working with the voice actor is an important part of the system development. The authors give pieces of advice on how to have successful recording sessions.
The book has a nice balance of general principles and pieces of advice that can be directly applied. Compared to Kotelly's book, it has a more in-depth coverage of the topics. Compared to Balentine's book it provides a broader view of the development process as well as more detailed explanations of the principles behind the recommendations. On the minus side, the book is solely based on the experience of the authors. Although this experience is extensive, it seems that parts of the book are somewhat biased (e.g., SLM vs. grammar-based speech recognition, high focus on personas). It is not always clear when the numbers given in the books are based on real experience and when they are invented by the authors for the mock application. Some of the pieces of advice may also be difficult to directly apply in practice, since they depend on using vendor tools.
In my opinion this book should be required reading for developers of telephony applications and providers of platforms for speech application development.

Ideal reference book for UI.

This is probably the most useful book about UI design for speech applications I've seen, very sensible and straight forward, with the right amount of attention given to a good range of topics.

I hate the term 'VUI' because it sounds silly when you say it. Apart from that, this book's a great source for UI workers.

Proceed with Caution!

Being a collector of luthiery materials, I had to buy this book to keep up to date. The photos and sequence of construction are nicely put together and there are a number of interesting techniques I've not seen in other manuals. That being said, I could not recommend the design offered as a viable first instrument for the beginning instrument builder.
There seems to a movement of sorts in the U.K. for enthusiastic amateur builders to come up with highly personalized designs, ideosyncratic assembly techniques and then... publish. Doubtfire, Kinkead, and now Willis all fall into this category. Each offers us an instrument design quite unrelated to what's been considered "the norm" in North American steel-string building. Of the two, I'm more confident in the Kinkead design.
Never having played one of Mr. Wills instruments, I can't comment on it's tonal characteristics. I am confident however, that this is an UNDERBUILT guitar. A dozen years of building and repair gives me concern about the following:
-The assertion that 2mm is the "optimum final thickness... for spuce tops" is pretty much insane. Two millimeters is considered razor-thin for most nylon-string classical designs.
-Couple that thin top with the X-brace layout described and you have a recipe for collapse. The braces are heavily decoupled, and they are at lacking at least 25% of the mass found on typical factory guitars.
-The low-profile design of the heel is elegant, but structurally problematic.
-The Spanish heel design with integral neck and top block can work for steel strung instruments, but is highly irregular.
-The extreme back-set neck angle necessitates an auxillary wedge under the upper part of the fretboard. Why? This geometry results in 3/8" of saddle protruding above the hight of the bridge. Assuming one can find a commercially prepared bridge blank this tall, you've still got an awesome amount of forward torque on the top.
-The assertion that, "a suitable height is about 5/23in (4mm)on the sixth string" is again,-laughable. Any repair person presenting a customer with a lightly built instrument obviously designed for fingerpicking with that sort of setup would be out of business in short order.
If I'm reading the label afixed to the instrument correctly, this is Mr. Willis' 16th instrument. The text bio states that he started devoting his time to instrument building in 2003. This book is copyrighted 2006. I'd be interested to see what changes he's made to his design. (There are very few photos on his website, but quite a number of ads for this book).
In summary, if you want to build a guitar modelled on the Martin OM design as was stated in the introduction, purchase a Martin plan from one of the suppliers. It's a time-tested design, unlike Mr. Willis'. And if,(again like the introduction says), you think the idea that starting a business making musical instruments is an exciting possibility, do follow his advice and consult a qualified business adviser. Perhaps he or she will suggest taking photos of one of your first guitars and publishing a book so you too can be a master.
-In all seriousness though, please don't use a regular household fan to exhaust the lacquer fumes from your spray booth as pictured on p.23. A spark from the motor could cause an explosive fire that could end your luthiery career very quickly.

Guitar making review

It turns out that guitar making is a complex art and there are many different ways for a beginner to approach it. The most complete book is William Cumpiano's "Guitar Making, Tradition and Technology". However, I found Willis "Step by Step Guitar Making" useful and valuable. It is shorter and clearer than Cumpiano and interestingly, a lot of the steps, sequence of operations, and jigs are different. For me, the differences between the two books help in understanding which steps are the most critical and which steps can be altered to best accomodate your particular skills, experience, and available tools. If you are serious about learning guitar building, I would recommend getting both books.

Great book

I have purchased various books on the subject but quite frankly I always wanted to purchase this book. First of all I like this Luthiers guitars. His methods of guitar building are interesting for one thing he utilizes a Spanish heel type of guitar construction on a OM(orchestra model) type guitar. Nice supplement

The Kumon series is excellent. My oldest was struggling with pre-algebra, so I bought these books to supplement with some at home 'summer school' (much to her chagrin).

My only complaint is that the books offer 'tips' to students, which are essentially shortcuts to determine the correct answer; however, as most adults know, those tips are only useful in the very early stages of math and can cause no end of frustration in more advanced courses where they aren't as effective. Oh how I wish I could find a math book that didn't rely on shortcuts.

I was hoping that this workbook has explanation but it doesn't. I needed something that explains. This just had problems and answers, doesn't show how to solve.

Impressions of Plastics:Materials and Processing 3rd Edition (Paper Back)

The paperback version appears to be a photo-reproduction and not an original press run. The illustrations and photos are very poorly reproduced. The publisher should not be charging this outrageous price for such a shoddy reproduction. I'm sure the pictures and illustrations may have helped in presenting the information but most were so bad as to be more of a distraction than an aid. If this is a required text for a class try and find a hard bound copy. Hopefully the photos will be properly reproduced. As for the text itself, this book seems quite in need of a refresh for a publication date as recent as 2005.

excellent book

I have used this book as a reference and for teaching a Plastics Course in Mechanical Engineering. It is very easy to read, it does not get into too much confusing details about the chemistry - it explains the chemical fundamentals very easily. It does a great job of relating plastic structures with actual properties such as permeability, strength and conductivity. All my students consider a great book. It is one of the best written books I have encountered during my academic career. Worth its weight in gold !!

Lots of content but poor quality book

I've been reading this book as part of an engineering Masters program. It covers a wealth of topics related to plastics, but I've not been impressed at all by the quality of the book itself. The pages look as if they've been photocopied instead of printed, so much so that all the images (which are black & white only) are washed out and nearly impossible to identify. The author also chose some ridiculous pictures, including one of a plate of spaghetti (to describe amorphous plastics) and a cake. I'm pretty sure anyone reading this book already knows what spaghetti and cake look like!

A Few Useful Chapters

This book has 13 chapters (the last chapter gives an overall view). I would have to agree with what fellow reader S. A. Mccullough (who gave this book a 1-star rating) said with regards to the first 5 chapters of the book - incoherent and has little to do with referral generation.

Real juice flows from the following chapters:
6. Using valuable content as marketing material
7. How to use Social Media, Blogs and tools like podcast and videos to engage customers
9. How to form win-win partnership with other businesses (both closely related and remote) to generate referrals to both partners

However, if you have read books like Get Content Get Customers : Turn Prospects into Buyers with Content Marketing; Satisfied Customers Tell Three Friends, Angry Customers Tell 3,000: Running a Business in Today's Consumer-Driven World; Word of Mouth Marketing, Revised Edition: How Smart Companies Get People Talking like I did, then I can assure you that the ONLY chapter you would find useful and new is Chapter 9 (how to form win-win partnership for referral generation). If you have not read these books, then The Referral Engine might be a good overall guide for you (but still, skip chapters 1 to 5) and that is why, assuming you haven't read those books, I gave it 3 stars.

2 stars have to be taken away regardless of whether you are new to the topic of referral generation or not due to the book's poor organization. It lacks a readily useable framework - the author does mention a "4Cs framework" - Content, Context, Connection and Community - but sadly the chapters are not organized around the 4Cs, in fact, they are rarely even mentioned throughout the book, and readers are left with the difficult task of figuring out which part of the book falls into which of the 4Cs.

To me, this book is quite a disappointment, especially when it has so many 5-star reviews.

Extraordinary Compliment To Duct Tape Marketing - A Must Read!

I have read countless books on marketing and sales. From Purple Cow to all the Zig Ziglar... and all of them have truly great theory. John's books takes the theories and puts the rubber to the road. I found Duct Tape Marketing to be a step by step guide to small business marketing. Referral Engine took it to a whole new level. It addresses the most important marketing method head on - referrals. There is no better marketing in the world, then a new prospect learning about you from their trusted friend or family member. John's book shows you how to do it over and over again. This book is not only a must read, it is a "must keep with you at all times" book.

In this new book Henrietta Moore examines the nature and limitations of the theoretical languages used by anthropologists and others to write about sex, gender and sexuality.

Moore begins by discussing recent feminist debates on the body and the notion of the non-universal human subject. Catherine McTamaney, EdD, is an award-winning Montessori teacher, former school director, and school consultant. Her writing appears in Montessori publications around the globe. McTamaney lives in Nashville, Tennessee, with her husband and two children, where she serves on the faculty in the Department of Teaching and Learning at Vanderbilt University's Peabody College.

Exceptionally insightful - a must read for anyone with children in their lives!

I love Catherine McTamaney's writing. She is observant and reflective and really makes you think as much with your heart as with your mind. I love to read it slowly, one essay every day or two, and then I enjoy letting her insights percolate for a bit before moving on to the next one. This, as well as her earlier book, The Tao of Montessori, is a must read for anyone with children in their lives. Profound questions and truths that apply far beyond teaching and far beyond Montessori are waiting inside the covers.

if you are a Montessori teacher, this is a lovely companion to the Tao of Montessori. If you work with children, or are a parent, these essays give you lovely glimpses into what it is like to be a child.
