Dr. Karimi is an active researcher and has published extensively in the area of Geoinformatics. He serves as the lead faculty for both the Geoinformatics Specialization (MSIS Program) and the Geoinformatics Lab at the School of Information Sciences.

His research interests include: Geoinformatics (Geospatial Information Systems, Global Navigation Satellite Systems, Remote Sensing), navigation, location-based services, mobile computing, computational geometry, parallel/distributed/grid computing, and spatial analysis algorithms.

Today, numerous applications are benefiting from geoinformatics techniques, technologies, and tools and with recent advances in geoinformatics and related technologies, such as Web services and grid computing, new geoprocessing paradigms and applications are expected to emerge. Dr. Karimi and his students look at real-world problems such as way finding, handicapped access to sidewalks and buildings, or social networking with geolocation capabilities.

May irritate some readers

This book tries to be accessible to a very wide audience. In Australia, where I did my undergraduate studies this could have been read by a beginning first year university student.

The author does not even suppose a prior knowledge of linear algebra.

The result is that the reader will confronted with a swarm of u's v's,w's,x's, y's and so on, rather than more abstract notions of functions. In fact this book looks decidedly 19th century in places. This is the opposite to a book by Serge Lang ,Dieudonné or Rudin. To be fair the author has gone to great lengths to motivate the mathematics and for this reason it may well be very popular with engineers and physicists.

However, in my mind it makes it harder to see the mathematical forest for the trees. On the other hand, if you are prepared to slog though it all you will be able to use this book on its own as a self study book.

In the end I found a book more suited to me for the concepts of forms: V. Arnold's Mathematical Methods of Classical Mechanics.

My son loves this book and anything that is Dinosaur Train. Not only can he tell me which dinosaurs the characters are, but now after reading this book he knows about the Aurora Borealis and wants to learn more.

Good book and it is just like the pbs tv episode. My 4 yo loves this episode, so he likes this story. It does not rhyme well and I can see how it might not be able to capture the attention of toddlers.

Excellent Primer

This is a great tutorial for anyone somewhat familiar with AutoCAD. It walks you right through from one exercise to another, with immediate results and increased confidence.
I worked through the book in about 2 weeks (1 exercise / night) and feel fairly knowledgeable with respect to many of the basics - and I knew zip about this before.
The book skips much of the laborious details found in other tutorials (left mouse-click to select, etc.) and gets right to the good stuff. Wastes little time in explaining everything, and assumes (mostly correctly) that you'll get it through repetition.
If browsing for a book to get familiar with MDT6, this is a good one.

Need more from this author, please!

Too funny! This book is well worth your afternoon or evening. Two women grow up in the same school situation, go off to the same college together and there grow into hate. One is a girly-girl and the other is the ultimate tomboy. They mingle with a sorority crowd and break up their friendship over a guy. As adults, they are slammed back together in a rich friend's drama and set off on a road trip to try to catch a swindling, philandering husband who has been thought to have perished in a plane crash. The dialogue is ultra hip (can we still use that word?), the scenes are hilarious and I truly thank the author and Penguin's First to Read program for a complimentary copy. This would be a terrific movie screenplay or series....hello Hollywood!

Loved it! I couldn't put it down!

Jacqueline "Jack" Jordan and Kitty Carricoe had the potential once to be best friends. Roommates in College they were opposites, but they seemed to balance one another out in the ways that mattered. When Kitty told Jack something that was hard for her to hear, and even harder for her to admit to, their friendship disinigrated into a series of petty pranks designed to hurt the other person as much as possible. Now adults, Jack and Kitty couldn't be more opposite. Kitty is the loving wife to a dentist and the mother to three children, and Jack is a journalist at the front line of danger. The only thing that they have in common is their friendship with Sarabeth Chandler, and she is the only person who can bring them together.

The two women are forced together when they receive word that Sarabeth's husband Trip has perished in a horrible plane crash. Both Jack and Kitty find the crash suspicious, especially now that the news has broken that Trip has "lost" billions of dollars. Kitty and Jack reluctantly embark on a bizarre road trip that will either save the day or kill them both.

I'm a huge Jen Lancaster fangirl and I eagerly read everything that she writes. I have to say, though, that The Best of Enemies was my favourite fictional release of hers to date! Her memoirs have a chatty, fun, hilarious vibe but with her last two fictional releases I felt that Lancaster was finding her fictional author's voice. I'm happy to say that she has definitely found it! Lancaster's fictional writing voice has sharpened and matured and The Best of Enemies was an enjoyable, fast-paced read!

I enjoyed the character development the most. When we begin reading the book we are given an initial impression of both Kitty and Jack. Kitty comes off as being sheltered and shallow, while Jack comes across as being pretentious. I didn't particularly care for either character at first, but as I got to know them both while reading the book I liked them each more and more. Lancaster does a spectacular job of peeling back the layers of each character to reveal who they really are. We, as readers, can't help but like what we find.

The mysterious aspect of the book was new to Lancaster as well, and I can say that I thought that she did a great job! Although you could still predict the twists and turns I thought that the way that the book was laid out was really fun and it made me eager to read on. I enjoyed that the book wasn't all about just one thing, but it covered several different topics, including fidelity, child abandonment, parenting and finding ones place in life.

I loved The Best of Enemies and I just can't recommend it enough. Lancaster's voice is fresh and interesting, and I truly can't wait to see what she will come up with next. If this book is any indication of what's in store then we are in for a treat! My thanks to the publisher for providing me with this review copy.

Lancaster has finally hit her stride as a fiction author

Lancaster has finally gotten the hang of fiction writing. Her other novels are not bad, but more hit and miss (loved "Here I Go Again" but didn't care for "Twisted Sisters"), but she's finally found her footing.

At first I was thinking, "Why do these people trash hotels? What's wrong with them?" As the story unfolds, you find out. I won't spoil it here though. The story is told in alternating first person of Kitty and Jack. Kitty is the uber mom and Jack is a fearless war reporter. Early on, they are sort of hard to like. Kitty is that terrifying alpha mother who judges everyone and Jack is the smug intellectual. However, these two work together and uncover some mysteries along the way and break through each other's tough exterior. These characters complement each other well and I wanted to be buddies with them. The secondary characters are also vivid and brought to life. Loved the banter with Jack's brothers and the funny scenes of Ashley helping Kitty and Jack get hoochied up for the recon at the bar. However, nit pick, I don't know what kind of c-section scar Kitty has, but I don't see how a body shot would pool up in it. Modern c-sections are not the old school top to bottom ones. Mine was small, well below the belly button, and left to right. Anyway, there's also lot of "Top Gun" quoting that is charming and funny. The story behind Jack's mom surprised me.

Anyone who has read JL's memoirs, you'll know she's a big animal lover and there are animal cameos of Jack's brother Bobby's three cats (maybe based on Lancaster's 'Thundercats'?): Bode Meowler, Jean Claude van Kitty and Tomba Cat.

I listened to this on audio and the narrators are fabulous.

In the early 1950s he also wrote three short, spellbinding mystery novels, which the University of Chicago Press has reissued in paperback with new translations from the German by Joel Agee: The Pledge and The Inspector Barlach Mysteries:The Judge and His Hangman &Suspicion. The latter includes a thoughtful foreword by Sven Birkerts, who praises Dürrenmatt's talent as a captivating entertainer who could also 'play through complex moral issues with a speed-chess decisiveness and inexorability.' . . . These are slender tales. Five stars for SUSPICION

I came to Friedrich Dürrenmatt through the recommendation of another Amazon reviewer, and had not even heard of him previous to that. These two novellas collected by the University of Chicago Press seemed like accessible starting points, though I think it can be said that the idea that these are 'mysteries' in the same sense as traditional whodunnits is misleading. While they do both adhere to the conventions of the genre, I believe Dürrenmatt is tackling more that just the psychological interplay between detective and criminal. This is, rather, an examination of the moral landscape in the years immediately following World War II.

In THE JUDGE AND HIS HANGMAN, the ailing Inspector Barlach faces an old rival whom he has pursued throughout his career, and who has made it his life's work to thwart the policeman by committing crimes right under Barlach's nose, but which are un-provable (or un-convictable, which amounts to pretty much the same thing). There are shades of Dostoevsky here, with the villain unconcerned with the crime itself, other than as a way to prove he can get away with it, but the story, by the time it twists and turns to the end, rather than a defense of a moral structure, is much more open-ended.

SUSPICION picks up immediately after THE JUDGE, as Barlach is recovering from the life-saving surgery he needed at the end of the previous novella. A chance occurrence sets him on the trail of a suspected SS doctor, now possibly hiding from his war crimes as the operator of a clinic for the aging super-wealthy. Barlach manages to get himself transferred to the clinic, but discovers that his suspicions could not have prepared him for the monstrous reality that he finds.

As far as the term 'mystery' applies, THE JUDGE AND HIS HANGMAN is the more conventional tale. But of the two, I preferred SUSPICION for its ideas. With THE JUDGE, we see an early examination of the intellectual ideas present in such films as DIRTY HARRY, minus the violence and the star power of its actors. It may seem like a crude comparison, but I always thought the real thrust of films like DIRTY HARRY was disguised due to the crowd-pleasing impact of the denouement. Yet the idea of the inviolability of law and the human idea of justice is the heart of both the film and the book. Where Dürrenmatt excels is in his refusal to manipulate the reader - he raises the question and leaves the reader to ponder what his answer might be to the conflict.

Still, the core ideas of THE JUDGE AND HIS HANGMAN are no longer as fresh as they once were, at least to me. Because of this, I felt ambivalent about it. I do think it was worthwhile, especially as a set-up to SUSPICION, which had a much greater impact on me. It is difficult to examine it too closely in this format, as I would prefer to have future readers come to it without any heightened expectation, but I did feel that the final pages, as Barlach faces his nemesis, were profoundly challenging toward old paradigms of faith, belief, and morality. Dürrenmatt provides no answers, though I believe the author set up the conflict as a prod to society to come up with new solutions since the old abstractions were still smoldering on the ash heaps of Europe.

Sometimes books come to the reader at the time when they are best ready to hear the message. As the concepts involved in SUSPICION seemed to round out some other topics that had been fresh in my mind, I found it very powerful. Both novellas have flaws - one reviewer mentions that the translations are weak, and I agree that the prose sounds awkward at times. There is also a deus ex machina in the last story - but the technical details of the text, while not exactly irrelevant, did not obstruct enough to dampen the impact of Dürrenmatt's questions. In SUSPICION, I think those questions are as important today as they were sixty years ago.

Duerrenmatt's work is timeless...

I remember reading "Der Richter und sein Henker" ("The Judge and His Henchman") 20 years ago in German and being very impressed with Friedrich Duerrenmatt's sparse, spare prose and his ability to create suspense and a sense of place with very few strokes. I also remember that Inspector Baerlach (Barlach in this English translation) was no cuddly investigator. Now, as I read this excellent English translation, I realize that the Inspector Barlach character has been used to discuss the larger philosophical and moral quagmire post-war Switzerland found itself in. The themes are universal, but in using a "Krimi" format with a cookie-cutter plot and almost stereotypical characters, Duerrenmatt was able to bring these compelling arguments to the public at large. I continue to find his work alternately entertaining and disturbing. It remains quite a good, brisk read...

Chilling

These stories are perhaps not as good as The Pledge - which is one of the most chilling stories of obsession I've ever read, and I am amazed noone's turned into film, because it seems obvious film material. However, The Judge and his Hangman is similarly obsessive and creepy, but Suspicion doesn't quite work for me. Although the premise of the story - Barlach discovers the identity of a war criminal working in a Swiss hospital and has himself checked into the hospital to confront him - is fine, there are too many deus ex machina moments, and the conclusion seems unlikely. I realise that Durrenmatt is not interested in the police procedural per se, but uses it as a way of expressing ideas about Swiss society and its lack of willingness to face up to uncomfortable truths, but still, if you use that format, then you need to take it to a sensible conclusion for the genre and for me, Suspicion doesn't do that. The Judge and His Hangman is highly recommended and if you haven't read The Pledge, you really should
