Appears to cover the subject in detail, and was an excellent introduction to a neophyte such as myself. Good, clear and concise explanations and definitions that gave me complete access to the subject matter.
Some gripes, though:
My organization's library bought it for around $50, perhaps a couple of years ago, I believe. When I went to order my own copy (how's that for an endorsement!) I found it was now $140. For $140 I expect a superior book, and this is very good, but not superior - though no poor reflection on the authors.
The printing is extremely poor (is this from the budget department of John Wiley & Sons, Inc., Wiley-Interscience)? I think not - from the price. Yet the fonts, the layout, and even the antique cover design reminds one of something typeset and printed in the early 1950s, and the monochrome photographs are reproduced with atrocious quality--some are useless because they are so poor.
The text has many careless mistakes, mainly spelling mistakes, which really bug a detail-oriented person like myself. Did Wiley & Sons not appoint an editor for the book?
Finally, it deals mainly with temperate zones and I would have liked to have seen at least some information on tropical land stabilization, since my work is tropical and the needs here are extreme. Perhaps the principles are the same, and the temperate bias just represents the authors' experience.
In summary, Drs. Gray and Solir have produced a text to be proud of, but Wiley-Interscience have made a vastly inferior product out of it. That must be rather bitter-sweet for the authors.
PS: Does anyone know where I can get a copy for a reasonable price (under $50)?

I am a coding instructor and this book is useless.

This book says it is for updates after October 1 2016 but it did not include the 2017 updated guidelines--and there are a lot of changes! I am a coding instructor and this book is useless.

they couldn't even tell me what was so special about it (I'm pretty sure they didn't know how to read the code ...

1171 pages plus the appendix and illustration section, spiral bound paperback, 2.2 inches thick and weighs 4.9 lbs. I got this book for one reason and one reason only and that was to see why one blood test I had cost $900. I mean, get real. When I called the hospital, they couldn't even tell me what was so special about it (I'm pretty sure they didn't know how to read the code either). I asked the doctor what all it told since it must have been most informative since it cost so much. He said my calcium level was high. That's it? I have had those yearly blood draws at the hospital before for $12 that told you what your calcium levels were and much more, so that didn't make sense either. I'd like to know why they have to code everything anyway, since they could write down what they did much faster than they could look in one of these books and find the code for it. It's in sections, like mental health is in one, and body sections in others and that helps find thins a little easier. I guess the insurance company is set up to read the codes only or something. After finally finding the code I was looking for I was no further ahead in understanding what it meant and went to the internet to search further. My head is busting from trying to understand it and I don't feel like I'm any the wiser anyway. Since my insurance company didn't totally pay for all the $900 blood test I told the doctor not to be running any more unless he could tell me why he had to do so, and it better not just be to check my calcium level either. This happened 2 years ago and I still haven't gotten over it.

This book is great for the codes (if they are actually needed!) and I understood it without too much trouble (and sure never want to go in the line of work where you actually have to use this knowledge) so I guess it would be helpful to ones doing the coding. I assume from what they say that it is the coding that will be used from October of this year to October of next year when lo and behold another coding book comes out that you have to learn all over again. I wonder why one wouldn't work for years myself. I mean does all the coding change or something! There is a booklet included that is the 2017 ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting that is valid October 1, 2016 through September 30, 2017. The front of the big book has the same dates it's valid. (See what I mean....every year!)

ICD-10-CM Expert for Physicians 2017 (Spiral) 2017th Edition is a very useful book. I have been working in a doctors office doing some billing and other work such as ordering tests for patients. Having this book at home helps me to understand the different tests and procedures as to how they apply to each patient. It is not complete as the codes keep changing are are constantly being updated, but it is a good reference.

It is a thick book, a bit heavy to sift through. The color coding does help to navigate the text. I find it interesting as to what a code for a test is billed for and finding out what the insurance company will pay for it. The numbers vary significantly. One test that is coded at $600 only will get $212 from a major medical insurance plan.

ICD-10-CM Expert for Physicians 2017 (Spiral) 2017th Edition is book that might not be good for some people, as the codes in it are not fully current, but the book itself is very useful as a reference. For me, I am finding this book to be a great asset.

About the Author

Uwe Altrock has degrees in Mathematics as well as Urban & Regional Planning. He is now Professor for Urban Regeneration and Planning at the University of Kassel, Germany.
Sonia Schoon has studied Chinese language and culture at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou. She obtained an MA in Chinese Studies, European Anthropology and Public Law at the Christian-Albrechts University of Kiel, and graduated with a Dr.Phil. in Chinese Studies at the same institution.
