A good place to start...

No nonsense list of recipes. Not for someone who has never formulated cosmetics or Toiletry items. One needs to have a working knowledge of ingredients and chemistry. A must have for formulators. Each recipe is a good starting point for further experimentation. Worth every penny.

useful learning tool and reference

This is a large book. The format is just one complete recipe after another; there is no other text. The recipes are given in terms of percentage of ingredient by weight. This is extremely useful, even for beginners just getting started with diy formulating. You get the idea of how ingredients are used just by reading the recipes--but you will definitely need some resource (the web is great) to figure out what each of the ingredients does. This is especially important for those recipes (and there are many) that use proprietary names for common ingredients or blends thereof. A diy recipe often includes more generalized names like 'emulsifying wax'; a recipe in this book might say something like that, but not necessarily. But once you get the hang of looking up these alternate names, you can figure out what you can substitute for those ingredients. By this means you can really learn a lot and begin to take your own formulations to the next level.

Complete but very concise instructions are provided, in terms of which ingredients go in which phase, what the temperatures need to be, and how the phases are to be mixed. Unlike the usual diy recipes which tend to have two, and rarely three, phases, some of these recipes include 4 or 5 phases. I'm probably giving myself away as a relative beginner by saying this, but that was an eye-opener for me, and I started to see my own original creations in a completely new light because of it. Some of the novel experiments I was trying just weren't coming together when I tried to squeeze everything into two phases; but many more achievements become possible when you are open to the idea of maybe 6 or 7 phases!

Brand names and product names are not usually provided; instead, the source of the recipe is provided, and that is usually a corporation name, which is not necessarily something the consumer knows. In other words, if you are looking for the recipe for Johnson and Johnson's Baby Shampoo, you won't find exactly that wording, necessarily. But you will find a recipe for SOME product that is a baby shampoo.

It's not clear how or why the recipes are collected. I have a couple of the other volumes as well as this one. It looks like the editor just collects as many recipes (in all divisions of cosmetics) as he can get in some time frame, puts them in a volume, and publishes them. So the volumes are organized by time. Thus, you really can't tell before examining a copy, whether it will contain formulations that you are interested in. For example, you might want to create your own waterproof blue mascara based on the formula for Maybelline's Black Stilleto, but you have no idea ahead of time whether that particular formula will appear in a particular volume.

So all in all, good as a learning tool and occasional reference. I got out of it exactly what I needed. But unless you have access to endless ingredients, don't expect to just open the book and be able to create any of the recipes on the spot.

About the Author
Born in London, Len Deighton served in the RAF before graduating from the Royal College of Art (which recently elected him a Senior Fellow). While in New York City working as a magazine illustrator he began writing his first novel, The Ipcress File, which was published in 1962. He is now the author of more than thirty books of fiction and non-fiction. At present living in Europe, he has, over the years, lived with his family in ten different countries from Austria to Portugal.

Gallic espionage

Full disclosure: I have been a great fan of Deighton for years: I prefer him to the doyen of spy authors, John LeCarre--mainly because Deighton's plain writing style appeals to me far more than Le Carre's somewhat patronising tones as if sometimes he writes the way 'we toffs talk together', so get used to it!' 'An Expensive Place to Die' is one of Deighton's lesser-known works: but the narrator, never identified, seems to be the precursor of Bernard Samson, the dry-witted, sarcastic Cockney who leads us through the labyrinthine plots of Deighton's GAME, SET and MATCH trilogy [followed by HOOK, LINE and SINKER].
Perhaps, this novel deserves to be relatively little known. The plot is lightweight and there are no memorable characters--except inevitably the luckless narrator whose employers one has to assume are MI6, Britain's Secret Intelligence Service. But the novel's backdrop--Paris in the 1960s--is what saves the book: I knew Paris back then, too, and anyone who loves the City of Light, will enjoy this book. The sidewalk cafes, small artist studios, the shabby seventeenth arrondissement, the ubiquitous, blended odor of garlic and Gauloise, the cobbled streets baked by an early-summer heat wave, the resonant burps of two-stroke motorcycles--it's all here, hanging on a fragile but still very readable plot.

EARLY LEN DEIGHTON NOVEL -- NOT UP TO HIS LATER WORK

On the whole, I am a fan of most of Len Deighton's later works particularly all nine of the Bernard Samson Novels. I think that reading one of an author's early novels after having read, and enjoyed, much of his later work, leaves you ripe for a little disappointment. That was my reaction here. He just hadn't completely found his "voice" in this novel which was originally published in 1966, well before those nine Bernard Samson novels I mentioned earlier (Copyright dates 1984 through 1996).

I found the plot unnecessarily complex. It starts with an anonymous spy, residing in Paris, who receives a bundle of documents from a courier with the instructions to deliver them to a man he knows as Datt. But he is not do just deliver them at a convenient time or place. This would be too easy. He is to keep them until Datt gets them from him in his (Datt's) own time and by whatever method Datt decides on. Datt's method involves kidnapping him, injecting him with "truth serum." and having the documents stolen from his room while he is so detained. An interesting delivery, indeed!

This is the beginning of the the United States deliberate revelation of certain Nuclear Weaponry information, or perhaps well disguised misinformation, to representatives of the Chinese Communist government.

During the course of __AN EXPENSIVE PLACE TO DIE__, there are kidnappings, murders, scenes in a high end brothel that caters to diplomats, where dossiers on these diplomats are developed, and where films are made of them in compromising positions. There are surprises, double-crosses, and unexpected revelations around every corner before we finallly sort out the good(?) guys from the bad (also ?) guys.

If you like Len Deighton's later novels, this is a good book to read from the standpoint of seeing how much he developed as a spy novelist through the years, and it certainly contains the seeds of many of the themes he developed in his later novels.

In the words of a current movie critic, "I give it a moderate thumbs up."

The French Connection

I found An Expensive Place to Die (1967) the most readable of Len Deighton’s first four spy novels. It may or may not feature Deighton’s Man From WOOC(P) as its protagonist as his affiliation is never mentioned. In any case, he is some sort of British agent working on a rather hazy (to both him and the reader) assignment in Paris that has something to do with passing nuclear fallout data from American atomic experiments to the Chinese (China would test its first hydrogen bomb shortly after the book’s publication, which does make the story somewhat topical).

My problem with this book is that because the stakes are not made clear, it’s hard to work up any sense of suspense. The unnamed (I think he actually is named at one point but it could very be a fake name) agent does get into a couple of scrapes, including one where he is dosed with LSD as a kind of truth serum(!) but the gripping sense of true danger and tragic consequences for failure never really appear, at least they didn’t for me.

That said, An Expensive Place to Die is a modestly entertaining contribution to the swelling ranks of James Bond-ish spy literature that Ian Fleming spawned in the 1960s. In fact, this might be Deighton’s most Bondish effort with its alluring femme fatale of uncertain loyalties and eccentric villain with elaborate lair. What was also interesting to me was Deighton’s portrayal of Paris about a year before the events of 1968 with its trendinista pockets sitting side by side with squalor and all overshadowed by a truly creepy state security structure that seems to have few legal constraints.

About the Author

Alethea Morrison is the author of Homegrown Honey Bees. She lived in San Francisco with her husband, photographer Mars Vilaubi, before stepping into the wild yonder of rural Massachusetts together to raise their son, keep bees and chickens, brew beer, sew clothes, grow heirloom beans, and otherwise slow down to smell the flowers of a handmade life. Their experience raising chickens was chronicled in Chick Days. Morrison works as the Creative Director at Storey Publishing and serves as president of the Northern Berkshire Beekeepers Association.

Photographer Mars Vilaubi chronicled the adventures of his three backyard hens from their first days out of the egg through their first days laying eggs in Chick Days. He lives in western Massachusetts.

Best Beekeeping Book for Beginners

This is the book I wish existed when I started beekeeping in 2008. Loaded with photos and step-by-step instructions, it's one of the few books that will help you survive your first year, especially if you don't have a mentor. As the co-chair of the Albuquerque beekeepers group (400 strong) for the past 3 years, here's why I think beginner beeks will be especially well-supported by the approach in this book.

PROS:

- STEP-BY-STEP instructions are included for a variety of beginner tasks like installing a package, lighting a smoker, and conducting your first hive check. Seasoned beekeepers often forget how scary these first steps can be.

- PHOTOS, PHOTOS, PHOTOS! Everything from eggs and larvae to wax festooning to varroa mites to Nasonov fanning gets a gorgeous photo. I can't emphasize enough the importance of visual learning when it comes to beekeeping.

- A PERSONAL STORYLINE. This book follows the author's experience keeping backyard bees with her family. The good the bad and the ugly details are all included, making for a very forgiving and human narrative.

- INTERVIEWS WITH LOCAL BEEKS. Backyard beekeepers from San Francisco to Austin to Chicago are highlighted throughout the book. (I'm on page 47.) The sheer variety of beekeepers presented makes a new beek feel comfortable developing their own unique approach.

- A NATURAL APPROACH. Most books I used in my first year were very chemical-centric and solely devoted to Langstroth hives. This book primarily covers Langstroth hives but also discusses top bar hives and pays more than just lip-service to a chemical-free approach.

THIS BOOK HAS IT ALL!!!!!!!!!

Let me pre-face my review by saying I don't normally write reviews, but, here goes.
I had to on this one, because, this book has been wonderfully enjoyed by me and my two kids for many reasons.
It is a wonderfully written, informative how to book that takes you through something as daunting to myself as bee-keeping and it has opened up a whole new world of fun possibilities for me and my two kids! Seriously!
I bought the book on a whim, for many reasons, one, I like collecting books on crafting, do-it-your self projects, you name it, and.... I always have this goal of farm to table adventures, and bee-keeping is for me the top.... a secret wish that I never thought I'd actually be able to do.
Then arrives this book!
Firstly, it is really well-written. Not one of those how to books you just thumb through and mark pages...it has great stories about people doing small hives and showing you how you can too! I love that, it is very personal, and you instantly feel part of a fun community. It is easy to understand, and keeps you engaged with facts and everything you need to know-isms without being pretentious, dull, or repetitive. My daughter did a science project on honey bees and how important they are to our eco-system, and she was excited that that information was in there, too, a long with so much more we didn't know. We read the whole book together in just a couple of days, and have started our own plan! We are REALLY EXCITED!!
There are a lot of really great photos, and the photos are just beautiful, it is such a picturesque book, and I can't say enough of how the book is just really, really cute, and pretty, I love all the artwork and the layout of the pages, and the way the sections and chapters are organized, it is wonderful to remember it all, it flows really nicely.... It was really fun reading with my kids, and we are excited about starting our own hive this spring, it's really fun to think of all that is possible and involved with bee-keeping, who knew? You have to get this book and find out!!! I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in something to read about with their kids, or who loves crafts, hobbys, gardening, and, of course bees!
I will definitely be looking for more books from this author!

Very good bee-ginners book. I would not recommend this to anyone who has read other bee books though. The information is useful but very basic. Newbee and not sure about beekeeping?- great first book

Ana-s Nin (1903-1977) was born in Paris and aspired at an early age to be a writer. An influential artist and thinker, she was the author of several novels, short stories, critical studies, a collection of essays, two volumes of erotica, and nine published volumes of her Diary.

A Tale of Two Writers

The correspondence between the writers Anais Nin and Henry Miller is striking in its intimacy and, fair warning, could cause many a shy reader to blush. But this aspect of their letters is also relatively minor--the book is called "A Literate Passion" for a reason. I was drawn in not by Nin and Miller's attraction for each other, but by their powerful love for the art of writing and the tenacious loyalty they showed for each other's work even after they ceased their affair. They frequently discussed in their letters the books they had read, the movies they had seen, and the merits of various authors and philosophies. It was also encouraging for me as a writer to read of their difficulties and frustrations with getting their work published and how their persistence eventually paid off for both Nin and Miller.

Today writers often speak of community and searching for that supportive atmosphere that will help them do their best work. This book showed me that the community doesn't have to be a bunch of writers. The community could just as easily be only two people who, in the spirit of friendship, clearly understand each other's work and will encourage and go to bat for each other again and again. I felt the essence of this in one of Nin's letters: "You should be here. We should work together--read each other's work at night--fire each other, keep each other. This is a great crime, this separation. I won't mail you any pages. Your head is full enough and you have too much to do. Will give them to you when I see you. But send me yours."

And this from Miller consoling Nin after she received some negative criticism: "All of us know, when we do a thing, how much we left out, how greatly we failed, and we carry around inside us an image of the perfect thing that failed to materialize, and that we regard as the poem, that is what we demand credit for. This is our pride, our ego, demanding its full recognition."

For all their fine thinking, though, Nin and Miller in their letters also show themselves to be quite human in their vulnerabilities. They have episodes of selfishness, melodrama, immaturity, and plain silliness. But I found this hopeful as well--you don't have to be a perfect person to produce good writing. In fact I liked reading about how they were getting work done, often with life making its frequent interruptions. I'm grateful to own this book and to have this peek into the window of these two smart literary minds.

Passion in all it's literary glory!

Ah! Anais and Henry! Such inspiration to get back into writing letters long-hand...or simply writing love letters to my dear ones in general. This book is an absolute keeper. The personal exchange between these two forces is tender, genuinely passionate, emotionally raw, and an incredible insight into their otherwise personal correspondence. I intend to treasure this book for the rest of my life. Is this an extreme revelation? ...It is indeed a passionate one. ;)

Beautiful and passionate

It's so breathtakingly wonderful to read letters written by two articulate writers. Both Henry and Anais write charming letters to each other, and their relationship as writers and lovers really comes out. Sometimes it gets a bit choppy to follow because they have met in person and followed up on their conversations. So it's like listening to half a conversation. But then the rest of the letters are so enthralling, it doesn't matter.

My forth book by Foster

I put off buying this because, really, I've read a ton of non-dual books and, even though I am aware that non-duality is my path, reading about it is getting to be same-ole-same-ole. As I began reading this one, I thought I had probably wasted my money: "Yeah, I know that. Yeah, yeah. More of the same." But after a few pages, I realized that something that I couldn't define was shifting inside of me. Aha! Jeff was getting past my brain and speaking to my heart. This book IS different. Or perhaps it's effect has more to do with where I'm at than the words. Most likely, it is a combination of both. Anyway... I'm going to reread my other Foster books, for sure.

I have adored reading this book, over and over. It is like sinking deeply into your own joyful and bleeding heart. Its purity. Kindness. Eloquence. Comforting and real. It came at a perfect time in my life and has truly nourished me. It has challenged thoughts, torn at my vulnerability and comforted my aching. It should be recommended to anyone who is willing to be open to see what truly lies within. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have and can recommend it to others who have a desire to recognize what is already here. And its just beautiful poetry.

Once again David Bohm, one of the most original of thinkers, has demonstrated his ability to make original and fascinating discoveries in regard to, let us say, life in general. This is a combination of physics, biology, philosophy etc etc or as it used to be called natural philosophy. Bohm was one of this century's last remaining natural philospohers in a time of specialisation, in some ways akin to Robert Rosen, Darcy Thomson or Einstein all of whom were willing to expand their frontiers beyond their areas of specialisation. What singles Bohm out is his deep investigation of all aspects of thought especially the study of thought itself, its origin and dissolution and is human life possible without it, in other words is thought all there is or does being human mean a great deal more and other ?
In this short text Bohm looks at creativity, what it is, what it means in human life, how it works and various other aspects. Bohm, like in his other works, shys away from any form of solid definition, this is done on purpose, rather than because of a lack of understanding, Bohm insists that any form of thought, concept, idea which becomes crystalised as the "whole truth and nothing but the truth" interferes with the natural flow of reality which is ever changing and never static, this includes ideas as well which are insights about this flow (expanded on earlier in eg "Wholeness and the Implicate Order"). In this book he considers something he calls artamovement or "the art of fitting in the flow", here the word fit is in fact the meaning of art, in fact all forms of human endeavour are a form of art. This fitting in is the way people find out whether something is true or right in a context.
This, as usual, is highly original and especially true to itself, Bohm always writes what is true to itself and himself, he never, right until his dying day, failed to expound the truth whether he liked it or not. He epitomises the true seaker of knowledge which today is often smothered by individual desires, political expediency, domination from others or downright egotism. He was a remarkable man.

Consisting of four essays and an interview with Louwrien Wijers, On Creativity provides a clear window into the ruminations of physicist David Bohm. Author of a textbook on quantum mechanics, Bohm is best known for his speculations on "the implicate order," a world view which draws on quantum mechanics in an attempt to go behind colleague Niels Bohr's "Copenhagen Interpretation"-to wit, that the mathematics of quantum theory, which lead to paradoxes in the macroscopic realm, should not be construed as anything more than mathematical treatments that work. This view, or rather non-view, was not acceptable to Einstein. The basic solution of Bohm is to suggest that our entire three-dimensional reality, which shows evidence of nonlocality-the instantaneous measurable correlation of attributes of distant particles-is a projection of a deeper "enfolded" realm. These essays, however, with titles such as "On creativity," "On the relationships of science and art," "The range of imagination," and "The art of perceiving movement" are not overly recondite, abstruse, or abstract-let alone mathematical. In On Creativity, for example, Bohr analyzes what makes not just a great, but a truly original scientist, such as Newton and Einstein (with whom Bohm corresponded). Perhaps surprisingly, he includes Helen Keller and her teacher Anne Sullivan in their company. The reason has to do with Bohm's emphasis on an open-minded attitude, free of worldly obsessions such as career advancement or "kicks," that allows the truly creative mind to bust through societal blinders and see the world as a whole in a new way. In the case of Sullivan she exposed Keller, deaf and blind from birth, to water in a variety of settings, writing the word on her hand. At a given point, Keller, who was animalistic before, put the different stimuli together, seeing their underlying unity. This is the kind of unity that Bohr argues Newton discovered in his realization that planets, like apples, fall-only much more slowly-a view that dispensed with the prevailing notions of the Greeks, who distinguished between the perfection of the celestial, and the imperfection of the earthly realm. Einstein went further, showing that seemingly equidistant and simultaneous times and places really depended upon the relationship of observers to observed. What is wonderful about Bohm is that he is deeply immersed in and respectful of, art and philosophy and religion. A close friend of Krishnamurti, he relates the work of Hegelian philosophy and Coleridgian poetics to scientific inquiry; he says he personally was inspired by artists. For example, in the essay, "The Range of Imagination," he attempts to link art to science by starting with Owen Barfield's analysis of Coleridge's distinction between two kinds of imagination-primary imagination and fancy. Although they are linked-mutually implicated is as everything else in Bohm's implicate universe-the primary imagination is much more than just putting things together in pleasing shapes. Perhaps the single biggest insight in this book, which everywhere battles what Bohm considers to be the deleterious effects of fragmentation (and mediocrity, conformity, and "the mechanical") in thinking, is his emphasis that, in great art, no less than great science, the truth is not necessarily what is liked. The truth is what we find *whether we like it or not*--and this scientific spirit needs to apply to art as well. In a way, however, this brilliant exposition creates a contradiction for Bohm, as he elsewhere identifies the true with the beautiful (in large part due to the aesthetic criterion of elegance for choosing among competing world views and mathematical theories). The book might also be criticized for being stylistically bland even as it sings the praises of art, as well as perhaps politically naive in tracing human malaise to an abstraction so great as "the fragmentary." Nonetheless, this work is highly recommended for its analysis of the fascinating, still woefully underexplored terrain connecting art and science.

About the Author
SIMEON NIEL-ASHER, B. Phil., B.Sc., (Ost.), qualified as an osteopath in 1992, and uses trigger point therapy in his every day work. He is the inventor of the Niel-Asher technique™ for treating frozen shoulder syndrome and was named by the Evening Standard newspaper as one of the top ten osteopaths in London. He is involved in treating, research, writing, and teaching throughout Europe, the Middle East and the USA.

To me, an instructive and rather inexpensive book about frozen shoulder.

To me, the book is worth the little money I paid. Very clearly written, the theory seems convincing, and as for practicality, concise directions and good diagrams make its application seems easy. Unfortunately, I did not apply any of the personal massages techniques and exercises of the book yet, because my chiropractor did a wonderful work on me and I made good progress with no effort required from my part other than to regularly visit my chiropractor. Therefore I can say nothing with absolute conviction about this healing theory, only that I recommend to anyone suffering from frozen shoulder to buy this relatively inexpensive book.
